A vising appointment refers to any individual, international or domestic, who is invited by a 杏吧原创 faculty member to:

• Participate in or conduct research
• Engage in teaching credit courses

Types of Visiting Appointments

Visiting Professor:
A professor who holds rank or held rank (if retired) at another university and is invited to teach at 杏吧原创 and/or invited to conduct research in collaboration with or under the supervision of a faculty member host in an area of established expertise. The appointment is typically made for one year with specified start and end dates. Generally, the visiting professor is on temporary leave from a permanent position at their home university during this time.

Visiting Scholar (Researcher):
An individual who is typically on temporary leave from a permanent position at another organization or institution and is invited to teach at 杏吧原创 and/or is invited to conduct research in collaboration with or under the supervision of a faculty member host in an area of established expertise.

Visiting Student (Researcher):
An individual who is registered as a student in a degree granting program at an institution abroad who is invited to conduct research in collaboration with or under the supervision of a faculty member host at 杏吧原创. The majority of student researchers are funded either by their home institution or an external funding agency. They may or may not receive payment from the host supervisor at 杏吧原创 in the form of a stipend (for coverage of accommodation expenses). The appointment is typically made with specified start and end dates.

Browse through our faculty and research interests by department or visit our , then contact a faculty member with a request to host your visit. Once you and your faculty host have agreed upon the details of the visit, complete and submit the Visiting Scholar Request Form (Research Only) Sept 2024

Will the visitor:

• Need to obtain a visa to enter Canada?
• Receive remuneration of any kind?
• Receive funding or reimbursement for any travel costs from a research fund?
• Require University Health Insurance?
• Require a campus card for access to library, labs, etc?
• Require use of office space or departmental resources?
• Require 杏吧原创 computing services and/or login credentials?

If you answered 鈥測es鈥� to any of the above, a letter of invitation is required.

杏吧原创 International will provide immigration advising for visiting researchers depending on each visitor鈥檚 individual case. Please refer to the information on 听补苍诲 to identify who will require what for entry. The majority of visiting researchers will also require an . 杏吧原创 International will provide an offer of employment number to include in the work permit application when eligible.

Yes. The University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) or equivalent coverage is required for all research visits. Contact ISSO to register. Visitors appointed for more than 6 months may be eligible for the (OHIP) three months after arrival.

Yes. Visitors who have work permits and visits longer than 6 months may be eligible for the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) after a three month waiting period. Visit the for more information.

Visiting scholars are considered affiliates rather than staff and as such, they are not provided with 杏吧原创 email accounts upon their arrival. Access to email and campus computing services can be requested at the discretion of the department. While visiting scholars may not require a 杏吧原创 email address for their work, they would require a 杏吧原创 email address in order to access 杏吧原创’s wifi, so it may be beneficial for departments to request email accounts for scholars who are staying for a longer term as a convenience.

Yes. 杏吧原创 International will facilitate library access for visiting researchers.

Visiting scholars are not enrolled in an academic program at 杏吧原创. When appointed, they will hold affiliate status and are not eligible to register in courses unless done so as a fee paying special student.
