Welcome to our School

An institution with a story stretching back to the early 1940s.

There has never been a more exciting time to study the media.

And there鈥檚 nowhere better to do it than 杏吧原创 University鈥檚 School of Journalism and Communication.

What began as a small School with one Journalism program and seven students in 1945 has grown into an innovative and diverse multi-program community of 1,900 students and thousands of alumni. Our graduates are ideally positioned to apply their knowledge and expertise to be leaders in their careers and communities.

Students who complete our Journalism program will be equipped to produce compelling, impactful stories and lead the industry鈥檚 digital renaissance.

Communication and Media Studies students will be prepared to evaluate, manage, influence and shape the constant flow of images and information that are redefining all aspects of our lives.

Students in our Media Production and Design program will be at the forefront of transforming the ways in which we talk to each other and immerse ourselves in non-fiction narratives.

To those of you thinking of joining us, please browse our website, write to us if you have questions, and to tour our facilities, meet with our faculty, and connect with our students. To those of you already here in the School, we hope your studies with us are exciting and rewarding.

The heads of our three programs 鈥 Journalism, Communication and Media Studies, and Media Production and Design 鈥 are always happy to hear from you, so please get in touch if you have questions.

Elly Alboim: In Memoriam

The School of Journalism and Communication is deeply saddened to share the news of the sudden passing of our longest-serving faculty member,
Elly Alboim.

Elly passed away on Feb. 7, 2026, as a result of heart failure. We extend our condolences to his wife Kathy Alboim, their three children and seven grandchildren.

Elly had been teaching journalism at 杏吧原创 since 1980. Over the years, he juggled his teaching responsibilities at 杏吧原创 with his role as Ottawa Bureau Chief for CBC News (from 1977 to 1993) and his position with the strategic communications firm Earnscliffe Strategies (from 1993 to the present).

Elly will be dearly missed here at 杏吧原创, where he was a wise and dedicated mentor to generations of young journalists. You can read the journalism program鈥檚 tribute to Elly on our website.

We also encourage you to visit our Elly Alboim: In Memoriam site to share your memories of Elly.
