The on-going crisis in Ukraine has resulted in a renewed focus on Russia’s foreign policy towardsits neighbours and the state of relations between Russia and Western nations. Despite the often sensational headlines, the motivations behind Russia’s diplomatic and domestic interests are—like those of all nations—inherently complex and require nuanced unpacking. In this special lecture, Professor Piotr Dutkiewicz will explore key themes in Russia’s foreign policy discourse, drawing on his thoughts and impressions fresh from attending the annual meeting of Valdai; a prestigious international research and discussion club based in Russia.

Piotr Dutkiewicz is a professor of Political Science and co-director of the Centre for Governance and Public Management at �Ӱ�ԭ�� University. He is internationally recognized as a leading expert on Russia’s internal, regional, and global affairs. In recognition of his outstanding body of research and contributions to Canada-Russian relations, Dutkiewicz has received the Russian Federation’s Order of Friendship from President Dmitry Medvedev (2009), the Embassy of Canada in the Russian Federation Award for his“distinguished and sustained contributions to Canada-Russia relations” (2012), and the Research Excellence Award from �Ӱ�ԭ��’s  Faculty of Public Affairs  (2014).
