Matt heads the Energy & Emissions Research Lab (EERL), who conduct internationally renowned research quantifying and mitigating methane and black carbon emissions in the upstream energy sector. Matt is also Scientific Director of the NSERC Strategic Network, a collaboration of five Canadian Universities and several national and international partners to quantify and mitigate flaring in the oil and gas sector.
Matt鈥檚 current research interests include:
- Aerial quantification of methane emissions and application to create measurement-based inventories
- Quantification and mitigation of emissions from gas flaring including large-scale windtunnel experiments and field work
- Optical diagnostics, including EERL鈥檚 novel 鈥淰entX鈥 technology for measuring methane flux from unsteady sources like storage tanks and 鈥渟ky-LOSA鈥 technology for quantifying black carbon emissions in plumes
- Technical analysis to support evidence-based methane regulations and standards
- Alternate approaches to methane detection including characterization of satellite systems and applications of UAV-based techniques
- Field measurement work to enable translation of lab-based research to practical outcomes
- Techno-economic analysis of greenhouse gas mitigation potential in the upstream energy sector
