Professor Oren Petel	MASc and PhD Positions in Traumatic Injury Biomechanics High-Speed Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner Algorithm – The Impact Dynamics Research Group conducts fundamental research on impact-related traumatic injuries, such as concussion. Our lab currently houses the fastest x-ray system in the world, operating at 10,000 frames per second. We are looking for a student interested in conducting a 4-month long research project into the use of open source CT software to develop an algorithm that would lay the groundwork to develop the fastest CT scanner in the world. This project will include an experimental as well as a numerical component to it. Interested MEng students should contact Prof. Oren Petel via email (oren.petel@carleton.ca). Jet engine casing impact facility upgrade — Air travel efficiency and reliability are essential to global transportation and commerce in modern society. As such, the continued evolution of jet engines is an ongoing focus of aerospace research, in particular, efforts to improve fuel efficiency and noise reduction. The development and integration of new materials to improve the acoustic signatures of jet engines must continue to prioritize safety. Jet engines are currently designed with casings that secure the engine from impact in the event of an inadvertent blade failure or bird strike, among other potential items of concern. This MEng project will involve the adaptation of an existing impact launch facility to allow for testing jet engine casing concepts against impact from turbine blades and other surrogate materials of concern at relevant speeds. The adaptation will involve the integration of a sabot stripping capability and redesign of the test section of the impact facility to facilitate videography. The project will involve collaboration with the jet engine manufacturer to define the scope of threats that should be planned for.
