Description of Research:
My thesis focuses on the pauper nurses of Victorian workhouses infirmaries. These unpaid and untrained women were workhouse inmates assigned to care for patients to help keep the workhouse’s operational costs low. My research explores how pauper nurses were more than just the precursor to modern nursing, often exemplified at the time by Florence Nightingale鈥檚 lady nurses. Pauper nurses also represent a unique facet of history from below because their voices are not well represented, yet they navigated the boundary-blurring world of the infirmary where men, women, and children of the poor and working classes intermingled.
