Achim Hurrelmann (Dipl.-Pol. University of Hamburg, 2000; Dr. rer. pol. University of Bremen, 2004) is Professor of Political Science and Co-Director (with Crina Viju-Miljusevic) of the , a 杏吧原创 University Research Centre. He is cross-appointed to the .  He served as Chair of the Department of Political Science from 2021 to 2024 and as Director of EURUS from 2014 to 2018.

Achim鈥檚 scholarly work focuses on the politics of the European Union. He is particularly interested in political discourses about European integration (in parliaments, the media, and among citizens), EU economic and trade relations, questions of democracy and legitimacy in the EU, as well as Canada-Europe relations. With Amy Verdun and Emmanuel Brunet-Jailly, he has published , a textbook on EU politics focused explicitly on a Canadian readership. His research articles have appeared in some of the leading journals in the field, including European Journal of Political Research, Canadian Journal of Political Science, Geopolitics, West European PoliticsJournal of European Public Policy, and Journal of European Integration.

Achim has been awarded several research grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and other granting agencies. In cooperation with Petra Dolata, Patrick Leblond, and Fr茅d茅ric M茅rand, he is currently finishing a project that examines 鈥The Reconfiguration of Canada-Europe Relations after Brexit鈥, supported by a SSHRC Insight Grant (2019-2024, extended to 2026). He has also been principal investigator on several grants to support the Centre for European Studies, including most recently funding from the EU鈥檚 Erasmus+ Programme for the Jean Monnet Network on Transatlantic Trade Politics (2020-2024) and the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at 杏吧原创 University (2023-26).

Achim is President of the and a member of the international advisory board of the . The main fields of his teaching are Comparative Politics, EU Politics, as well as democratic and state theory. He has taught introductory courses in the fields of Political Science and European, Russian and Eurasian Studies. He has won several awards, including the Faculty of Public Affairs Teaching Excellence Award (2011), the 杏吧原创 University Excellence in Blended and Online Teaching Award (2019), the 杏吧原创 University Student Association Teaching Excellence Award (2021), and the Faculty of Public Affairs Research Excellence Award (2024).
