2018 Holocaust Education Month theme: 80th Anniversary of Kristallnacht

This year marked the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass). On November 9, 1938 the worst outbreak of terror and violence since the Nazis came to power against Jews all over Germany, Annexed Austria, and in areas of the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia recently occupied by German armed forces, took place. By the morning of November 10, thousands of Jewish homes and businesses were destroyed, 191 synagogues had been set on fire, and although the exact figure is not known, it is likely that anywhere from over 100 Jews died as a result of the violence. 30,000 Jewish males were arrested and transferred to concentration camps.

This year鈥檚 theme for Holocaust Education Month (HEM) was The 80th Anniversary of Kristallnacht: What Shards Remain? The Teachers鈥 Workshop theme explored the complexities of Kristallnacht in the classroom and was facilitated by Leora Schaefer director of the Canadian program of Facing History and Ourselves. The teaching strategies and activities which were used by Ms. Schaefer during November 29th Teachers鈥 Workshop will be available shortly.
