Home office expenses
For 2021, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has extended the temporary flat-rate method for home office expense deductions. Under CRA’s flat-rate method, eligible employees can claim $2 for each day worked from home in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, up to a maximum of $500. The flat-rate method requires no form and has no requirement to keep documents to support the claim.
As an alternative to the flat-rate method, there is a detailed method using the Declaration of Conditions of Employment for Working at Home Due to COVID-19 (T2200S) form for employees seeking to deduct their actual employment expenses. Note that you cannot claim any expenses reimbursed by ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´. The eligibility criteria for both methods are on the .
Human Resources has made T2200S forms available electronically for all employees who qualify (i.e., any employee who was required to work from home at any point in 2021). A link to these forms can be found in the Tax Forms section of ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ Central. There is an alternate form for Quebec residents (TP-64.3-V), which is also available in the Tax Forms section of ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ Central.
Please note that ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ cannot provide legal or tax advice regarding an employee’s eligibility or eligible expenses.
Should you have any issues accessing these forms, please contact Payroll Services (payroll@carleton.ca).
