Highlights from the JCWS Atlas in a Day workshop

October 8, 2024

Time to read: 1 minutes

Cover and Back drawing by: Aya Usama

Held on May 3rd at the in the MacOdrum Library at Ӱԭ University, the Atlas in a Day workshop offered participants the opportunity to explore the theme of “Fragility” through the art of mapmaking. The workshop was guided by Laurence Simard-Gagnon, a professor in the department of psychosociology and social work at Université du Québec à Rimouski (UQAR), Lévis campus.

Over the full-day workshop, participants had the chance to dive into creative storytelling through the mapping process. At the end of the workshop, the maps produced by the participants were compiled to create a curated atlas centered around the theme of fragility. Aya Usama, an MA in Anthropology student, added a unique touch with a beautiful live cover drawing for the curated atlas. A big thank you to everyone who joined and contributed to this event’s success. We’re excited about future opportunities to continue to explore ways of storytelling through mapping.

2024 Flo Bird Lecture with Dr. Michele Lewis. Black“LGBTQIA+” Psychology: Understanding Collective Self-determination, Afrocentrism, and Optimal Identity

Tuesday, March 5, 2024
4:30 PM — 6:30 PM
2017 Dunton Tower

Black“LGBTQIA+” Psychology: Understanding collective self-determination, Afrocentrism, and optimal identity will be an overview of Dr. Michele K. Lewis’ Fulbright research project. Lewis will frame her work as intersecting Black Psychology, Culture Neuroscience, and what has been theorized as a Kemetic model of the cosmological interactive self (Maat, 2014). The objective of the project is greater understanding of spirit identities and interpersonal experiences of Black Same-Gender Loving (SGL), “LGBTQIA+” and/or non-binary gendered Black-identifying persons residing in Canada and the United States. Lewis’ use of Africentric methodology and reflexive thematic analysis (Braun and Clark) renders the project a decolonized form of doing international research. Her research questions address participants’ belief systems, mystic experiences, identity, motivations, and attitudes as revealed through Africentric methodology. Preliminary observations and analysis will be presented on this work in progress.

RSVP: Professor Birk Joins Panel for SPPA Students’ Anti-Racism Symposium

This Friday at noon, Dr. Manjeet Birk will be taking part of the “Unpacking: A Conversation Centering Lived Experiences of Racism” panel. This panel is 1 of 2 panels part of the SPPA Students’ Anti-Racism Symposium – organized by the School of Public Policy and Administration Society and the SPPA Anti-Racism Committee.

This symposium is a dedicated student-led panelist forum that centers on anti-racist knowledge mobilization and honours the lived experiences of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). Panelists will include SPPA students and diverse experts from the academia, non-profit, and public service sectors.

Date: February 2, 2024
Time: 12:00 PM to 4:30 PM
Location: 2nd floor Conference room, Teraanga Commons

The event will feature two panel discussions:

Panel 1 – Unpacking: A Conversation Centering Lived Experience of Racism

This panel will recognize persons who have lived experiences of racism as knowledge sources, with the goal of providing BIPOC students/employees with relevant skills and resources. In addition, the discussion will seek to raise broader awareness about the realities of racism and opportunities for change, acknowledging that everyone has a stake in anti-racist work

Panel 2 – Unlearning: A Conversation on Institutional and Systemic Change

This panel seeks to understand anti-racism using a macro lens of analysis. Recognizing that power is fundamentally and systemically embedded in institutions, the discussion aims to investigate institutional unlearning by highlighting institutional responsibility in effecting change.

Call for Submissions: 2023 FIST Grad Conference

October 8, 2024

Time to read: 4 minutes

SUBMISSIONS ARE NO LONGER BEING RECEIVED. PLEASE CONTACT FISTGradCon2023@gmail.com IF YOU HAVE ANY INQUIRIES.

The graduate students of the Feminist Institute of Social Transformation are excited to announce a call for submissions for our 2023 conference titled, “Transforming Our Social World: Radical Practices of World Building & Destruction”. The conference will be held as an in person/online hybrid from March 23-24, 2023.

We are inviting activists, collectives, community members, scholars, artists, writers, and graduate students to submit presentation proposals for projects that call for transformative social change and abolition politics.

This conference was inspired by our Institute’s recent name change, our personal projects, and the work of countless thinkers and activists working towards social transformation that benefits everyone, especially those living with multiple oppressions. We are particularly inspired by abolitionists and community organizers like . Their book (2021) calls on us to push past reform and build an entirely new world:

When thinking about abolition we also turn to , , and (2015). Abolition is about breaking down, or destroying, what oppresses us. But it is also just as much concerned with building things that nourish us. It is a transformative practice that is founded on collective struggle, care, and interdependence.

We invite submissions that call for the generative destruction of all systems of power (abolition) so that we can build systems that value all bodyminds and leave no one behind (transformation). We seek presentations that acknowledge the inevitability of harm and activate our capacity to feel it and heal it. We want to cultivate a space for collective participation where we can bring to life a world that centers consent, collective self-determination, belonging, accountability, connection, care, and harm reduction.

We are hoping to host a multimedia conference where presenters can use any form of knowledge-making, such as, but not limited to: stories (written and oral), songs, poetry, poster presentations, paintings or other artforms, podcasts, PowerPoints, research papers, TikToks or any other methods. Group presentations or activities are welcomed and encouraged. We are welcoming submissions in English, French, and American Sign Language. Kindly submit your application with the following content in one .pdf copy (single spacing, 12pt. font) to FISTGradCon2023@gmail.com by December 31st, 2022.

Please re-share with your network(s):

Today! We Still Demand: The Past, Present, and Future of 2SLGBTQIA+ Activism

Event Information

Activist-scholars will remember the historic protest “We Demand” and draw on their work to discuss past and present 2SLGBTQIA+ activism.

Ӱԭ this event

Join us for We Still Demand: The Past, Present, and Future of 2SLGBTQIA+ Activism!

Hosted by with support of the and activist-scholars Patrizia Gentile, Tom Hooper, and Gary Kinsman!

This year is the 50th anniversary of “We Demand,” one of Canada’s first 2SLGBTQIA+ rights protests, held on August 28, 1971 and organized by the Toronto Gay Action and August 28 Gay Day Committee. One of the outcomes of this historic mobilization was the listing of ten demands. They called for an end to police surveillance of 2SLGBTQIA+ people, discrimination in employment and immigration, removal of gross indecency from the Criminal Code, and changes to the age of consent, to list a few. Although the 1969 Criminal Code reform is often described as the ‘decriminalization of homosexuality in Canada,’ this is not the case.

In this event, speakers will demonstrate how 2SLGBTQIA+ communities continue to face discrimination despite these historic changes. They will speak to their own work as activist-scholars, as well as the historical context, demands, and silences to provoke discussions of queer resistance and commemoration.

Stay tuned on CCGSD’s , , and for updates!
