Ph.D. Ethics and Public Affairs

The PhD program can be completed in four years, beginning with two terms of coursework.

Core seminars EPAF 6100 and 6200 explore the nature and requirements of public reason, in application to policy issues in national and global contexts.
EPAF 6000 is a year-long workshop course in which students develop their research topics by identifying a possible research question, relevant ethical or political theories and concepts, and core literature.
A graduate course relevant to the student’s research.
A graduate course in social science methods, if necessary.

The next four terms lead from comprehensive exams to a thesis proposal.

Comprehensive examination on ethical theory, social/political philosophy, and theories of public reason.
Comprehensive examination or review essay on literature relevant to the student’s thesis topic.
Thesis proposal, with oral defence.
Practicum experience in a workplace where ethical analysis is relevant (can also be done later).
Optional course on ethics in organizations (can also be done later).

The remainder of the program focuses on thesis research and professional development.

Thesis research (including possible field research)
Thesis writing
Practicum experience in a workplace where ethical analysis is relevant (if not done earlier).
Optional course on ethics in organizations (if not done earlier).
Advising on career opportunities, organizations, and institutions relevant to the student’s abilities and research.
Presentation of research to a professional audience.

Ph.D. Ethics and Public Affairs (10.0 credits)

2. Proficiency in a social science research methodology, as evidenced by successful completion of an approved graduate-level methods course (0.5 credit) either at �Ӱ�ԭ�� University or another university. (May be satisfied on or after admission).

5. Public defence of a written dissertation proposal, preceded by its formal acceptance by the supervisory committee

The diploma programs can be completed within one year full-time or two years part-time:

In the first two terms, core seminars EPAF 6100 and 6200 explore the nature and requirements of public reason, in application to policy issues in national and global contexts.
The program can be completed by two of the following: supervised research tutorial; practicum; ethics in organizations; or another approved course.
