Scholarships

Applicants to the College of the Humanities are eligible for a wide variety of Scholarships and Bursaries, which are coordinated through 杏吧原创鈥檚 Awards Office.

Humanities students are eligible for the full range of Scholarships offered to all 杏吧原创 students. These fall into two tiers:

We strongly encourage students with over a 90% average to apply for a Prestige Scholarship.

College-Specific Awards

Pamela and Richard Joho Scholarship

Awarded annually to an outstanding student entering the Bachelor of Humanities, Bachelor of Arts in Greek and Roman Studies, or the Bachelor of Arts in Religion in the College of the Humanities (or any additional undergraduate degree program in the College of Humanities) at 杏吧原创 University. Eligible students must be Canadian Citizens or permanent residents of Canada (landed immigrants or a protected persons) and must demonstrate a strong academic background and participation in extra-curricular activities. Students who study abroad as part of any undergraduate degree program within the College of the Humanities are eligible to hold this scholarship in their year abroad.

This scholarship is renewable for up to four years. Application is required. Endowed in 2008 by Pamela and Richard Joho to honour their commitment to a classical education.
Value:  $9000

Pamela and Richard Joho Leadership Bursary

Awarded annually to an outstanding student entering the Bachelor of Humanities, Bachelor of Arts in Greek and Roman Studies, or the Bachelor of Arts in Religion in the College of the Humanities (or any additional undergraduate degree program in the College of Humanities) at 杏吧原创 University. Eligible students must be Canadian Citizens or permanent residents of Canada (landed immigrants or a protected persons) and must demonstrate a strong academic background and participation in extra-curricular activities. Students who study abroad as part of any undergraduate degree program within the College of the Humanities are eligible to hold this bursary in their year abroad. Recipients will have demonstrated financial need and must meet OSAP鈥檚 Ontario residency requirements.

Maurice Price Foundation Scholarship

Endowed in 2015 by the Maurice Price Foundation.

Awarded annually to one outstanding student entering or proceeding from one year to another in a Bachelor degree program within the College of the Humanities at 杏吧原创 University. Preference will be for a student in financial need.

Maurice Price Foundation Award  

Awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Director of the College of Humanities, to one outstanding student entering or proceeding from one year to another in a Bachelor degree program within the College of the Humanities at 杏吧原创 University. Preference will be for a student in financial need. Endowed in 2016 through the generosity of the Maurice Price Foundation.

Maurice Price Foundation Travel Bursary 

Endowed in 2016 through the generosity of the Maurice Price Foundation and revised in 2017, this bursary is awarded annually on the recommendation of the Director of the College of Humanities to students who are traveling abroad for study in fulfillment of their curricular requirements, or as part of organized travel through the College. Such initiatives may include attendance at archeological summer field schools, travel courses offered through the College, group trips associated with the College or other travel opportunities approved by the Director.

Maurice Price Foundation Summer Research Internships

**Please note that for summer 2025, this award has been paused.**

Internships will be made available annually by the Director of the College of the Humanities, to promising, full-time students proceeding from one year to another in a program within the College of the Humanities. These internships are intended to assist full-time returning undergraduate students in gaining summer research experience. Application is required. Endowed in 2016 through the generosity of the Maurice Price Foundation.

Students are invited to submit a research project that they propose to work on during the summer of 2024 in collaboration with a College faculty member. This summer we have one internship worth TBA, for which the awardee is expected to conduct 120 hours of research. This represents a time commitment of at least a .5 credit course and recipients are required to a) have regular meetings with their supervisor and b) produce a report on their research, or a potential colloquium presentation, equivalent to a major term paper.

Interested students should send an application by email with the following information to the Undergraduate Administrator, Andrea  (andrea.mcintyre@carleton.ca).

  1. Resume with student number and year/program indicated.
  2. Detailed description of proposed research project (no more than one single-spaced page), setting out the project you would like to research and what skills and experiences you hope to gain through this program.

A statement of support from College faculty member who is willing to supervise the project is also required, and may be sent separately. At the end of the internship the awardee is expected to submit a brief summary of research in early September that may be posted on the College website and also present their research at the Welcome Reception for all students in September.

Bachelor of Humanities Scholarships

The Lee Valley Entrance Scholarship

Endowed in 2001 by Leonard and Lorraine Lee, the Lee Valley Entrance Scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding student entering the Bachelor of Humanities program in the College of the Humanities and is administered by the Awards Office. No application is needed for this award. This scholarship is awarded automatically by the College of the Humanities, by incoming cgpa.

Beverly Krugel Scholarship

Endowed in 2001 by Mrs. Beverly Krugel, the Beverly Krugel Scholarship is awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Director of the College of the Humanities, to an outstanding student enrolled in the College who is proceeding from one year to another. This scholarship is awarded automatically by the College of the Humanities, by cgpa.

Charles Douglas Ogilvie Scholarship

Endowed in 2016 by the estate of Charles Douglas Ogilvie, this scholarship is awarded annually on the recommendation of the Director of the College of Humanities to an outstanding student enrolled in the Bachelor of Humanities program at 杏吧原创 University.  Preference will be given to third-year students who will be earning credits toward their degree during an exchange to a foreign university. This scholarship is awarded automatically by the College of the Humanities.

Greek and Roman Studies Scholarships

Coulson Memorial Scholarship

Awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Classics, to an undergraduate student proceeding from one year to another of a Classics program. This award was endowed in 1990 in memory of Maria Pia Coulson and Tom Hunter Coulson.

Robert E. Osborne Scholarship In Classical Greek

Awarded annually, when merited, on the recommendation of the Advisor for the Greek and Roman Studies program, to a student who has demonstrated excellence in the study of classical Greek.

Endowed in 2009 by John Osborne, in memory of his father Robert E. Osborne, former faculty member at 杏吧原创 University.

Religion Scholarships

William and Mary Iwasaki Memorial Scholarship

Awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student entering or proceeding from one year to another in the Bachelor of Arts program who is studying Religion.

Endowed in 2006 by Caroline Iwasaki, BA/67, in memory of her parents William and Mary Iwasaki.

India鈥檚 Rich Heritage Studies Scholarship

Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Director of the College of Humanities to outstanding undergraduate students entering or continuing in a degree program within the College of the Humanities who demonstrate an interest in Sanatana Dharma (Hindu Studies.) Endowed in 2022 by Kanwal (Ken) Talwar in memory of his uncle Mr. Shiv Charan Laul Talwar, and to honour the concept of India鈥檚 Sanatana Dharma.

Edgar & Dorothy Davidson Travel Bursary in Religion Studies

Awarded annually to students enrolled in a Religion program at 杏吧原创 University who are undertaking travel in support of their studies.  Application to the Davidson Fund Committee is required.

Established in 2011 from the Edgar and Dorothy Davidson Fund in Religious Studies. To apply, visit this page.

Edgar & Dorothy Davidson Bursary in Religious Studies

Two bursaries to be awarded annually on the recommendation of the Davidson Fund Committee to graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in a Religion program at 杏吧原创 University.  Eligible students must demonstrate financial need.  If a graduate student is selected the bursary will be awarded by the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs.

Established in 2011 from the Edgar and Dorothy Davidson Fund in Religious Studies. To apply, visit this page.

Allama Mohammad Iqbal Award

Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Department of Religion to an undergraduate student who has shown excellence in the field of Islamic studies.

Donor: The Government of Pakistan. Endowed 1982.

Andras Memorial Award

To support the cost of a research project or paper undertaken by an undergraduate or graduate student attending 杏吧原创 University. This grant is awarded in alternate years for a research project in one of the following areas: (a) Jewish studies; (b) trade union history or the democratic socialist movement in Canada.

Endowed 1972 in memory of the late Mr. A. Andras, a member of 杏吧原创鈥檚 Board of Governors. Revised 1978.

Bertha F. Davis Award in Religion

Awarded annually to an outstanding student enrolled in the B.A. or Honours program in the Department of Religion at 杏吧原创 University.

Donor: Bertha Florence Davis. Endowed 1977.

Imam Tawfiq Shaheen Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1998 by the Ottawa Muslim Association in memory of the late Dr. Tawfiq Shaheen who was the Imam of the Ottawa Mosque from 1980-1997. It is awarded annually, when merited, on the recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, to a full-time student enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program who undertakes a research project embracing, among other Islamic subjects, Islamic religion, Islamic jurisprudence, Islamic art, Islamic history, Islamic culture, Islamic ethics or Islamic philosophy.

Louis and Miriam Goldstein Book Award in Judaic Studies

Awarded annually to a deserving 杏吧原创 University student in Judaic studies, on the recommendation of the Department of Religion.

Donors: Louis and Miriam Goldstein. Established in 1983 in honour of 杏吧原创 University鈥檚 Fortieth Anniversary.

Robert E. Osborne Scholarship

Awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Director of the College of Humanities, to an undergraduate student in the Religion program. Preference, in order, will be given to the students studying in the areas of New Testament, Biblical and other forms of religious studies.

Endowed in 1986 in memory of Robert E. Osborne who was a professor in the Department of Religion. Revised 2004.

External Scholarships

The Canadian Institute in Greece

Dr. Leander Tryphonas Study in Greece Bursary

Thanks to a generous donation from the Canadian Institute for Mediterranean Studies (Ottawa Chapter), and the Parnassos Cultural Society of Ottawa, the Canadian Institute in Greece (CIG) is proud to be able to offer the Dr. Leander Tryphonas Study in Greece Bursary. The bursary aims to support undergraduate students based at a Canadian university who have reason to travel to Greece.

This is a merit-based award which aims to promote the diversity of students involved in archaeological projects and/or study tours in Greece. Special consideration may be given to students applying from universities in Ottawa, the city where Dr. Tryphonas lived and worked for much of his professional career.

The Institute therefore invites applications for the Dr. Leander Tryphonas Study in Greece Bursary to be held during the spring or summer of 2025.  The deadline to apply was March 1, 2025.

CIMS-CIG Student Travel Bursary for Undergraduate Studies in Greece

Thanks to a generous donation from the Canadian Institute for Mediterranean Studies (CIMS), the Canadian Institute in Greece (CIG) is proud to be able to offer the CIMS-CIG Student Travel Bursary. The bursary aims to support undergraduate students based at a Canadian university who have reason to travel to Greece. Travel could be for the purpose of participating in an archaeological project, attending a summer program or study abroad experience, or participation in some other academic activity that requires the student to be in Greece. We are particularly interested in supporting students who identify as members of historically underrepresented groups.

The applicant must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant, pursuing undergraduate studies, and have a clear need to travel in Greece for purposes of research in any field of Hellenic studies, ancient to modern.

Within three months of the end of the travel period, a brief report must be sent by the bursary recipient to the Chair of the CIG Fellowships Committee describing the work that was accomplished.

In any subsequent publication of the research work done under the auspices of this bursary, the recipient shall acknowledge the Canadian Institute for Mediterranean Studies, the Canadian Institute in Greece, and the CIMS-CIG Student Travel Bursary.

One or more bursaries will be offered each year, amounting to a total of CAD $2,000. The deadline to apply was March 1, 2025.

Archaeological Institute of America, Ottawa Society Annual Field School Incentive Fellowship

With a view to promoting archaeological inquiry and public understanding of the material record of the human past and to foster an appreciation of diverse cultures and our shared humanity, AIA Ottawa is pleased to offer an annual Field School Incentive Fellowship with a value of $500. The purpose of the fellowship is to provide financial assistance for a first- time participant in an archaeological field school recognized by the AIA.

AIA Ottawa invites applications for one fellowship of $500 from students who will be attending an archaeological field school recognized by the AIA in 2025.

Deadline for Applications: April 1, 2025.  The deadline will not be extended.

The Etruscan Foundation Fieldwork Fellowship

The Etruscan Foundation Fieldwork Fellowship is designed to support participation in field schools or archaeological fieldwork at Etruscan and indigenous sites of non-Greek Italy from the Neolithic through the 1st Century BCE.

Harry C. Maynard Scholarship

Through the generosity of the late Harry C. Maynard, for many years a teacher of Classics at the University of Toronto Schools, a program of scholarship assistance for students of Classics has been established by the Trustees of Mr. Maynard鈥檚 estate. The deadline of November 1st, 2024 has passed.

The Desmond Conacher Scholarship

This scholarship is offered in memory of Desmond Conacher, formerly Professor of Classics at Trinity College, Toronto, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and Honorary President of the CAC. The scholarship has been endowed through donations from his family, friends, colleagues, and universities with which he was associated. Its purpose is to assist and encourage a young scholar entering graduate studies in classics. The scholarship is administered by the CAC through its Awards Committee. One award of $4,000 is offered each year.

Mosaic Scholarship

This scholarship seeks to encourage and support students from historically underrepresented groups in Canada, such as visible minorities and indigenous populations, in the discipline of Classics. One award of $500 is offered each year.

Eligibility and criteria: Applicants must identify as an underrepresented group, be Canadian students (citizens or permanent residents) and currently enrolled in an undergraduate program in Classics or similar program at a Canadian University. Specializations within the general area of Classics, such as ancient history, ancient philosophy, and classical archaeology are eligible. The main criterion is academic achievement.
