Language Requirement

The BGInS program requires students to achieve at least an intermediate level of competence in a language other than English.

Why does BGInS have a Language Requirement?

  • Cultural realities and differences are deeply embedded in the structures and signifying practices of languages; a key requirement for engaging with the world is the ability to communicate in more than one language.
  • Learning a second language will strengthen the competencies of BGInS graduates in that they will be able to have both varied and meaningful social and cultural interactions.
  • Employment opportunities may also diversify as a result of language skills.

Note: For students enrolled in one of the geographically-defined regional Specializations or Streams, only certain languages relevant to that region of the world may be used to satisfy the language requirement.  See the program requirements in each of the regional Specializations and Streams for further details.
