Update on the cuLearn upgrade /tls/2016/fixed-update-culearn-upgrade-2/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=fixed-update-culearn-upgrade-2&utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=fixed-update-culearn-upgrade-2 Mon, 26 Sep 2016 14:13:05 +0000 http://carleton.ca/ims/?p=5018 We are pleased to share that the three significant issues that were identified in the cuLearn upgrade from Moodle version 2.8.7 to version 3.1.1 have been fixed.

On September 21, we indicated that these three issues were:

  1. Grading assignments – slow page loads: When an instructor attempted to open a student assignment from the gradebook, the assignment page took a long time to load. This is now fixed and the grading assignment page loads much more quickly.
  2. Restricting access permissions – cannot be modified or deleted: Restrict Access Permissions are conditions set up in a course that permit students to progress through a course based on achieving a particular benchmark. If instructors attempted to change or remove a condition, they received an error message indicating that they could not complete the change. Instructors no longer receive the error message and can complete the change.
  3. Uploading multiple feedback files – produces an empty field: When instructors attempted to upload multiple assignments with feedback to students from a zip file, the zip file appeared to upload, but it was empty. The zip file now contains the correct information.

We appreciated your patience as CCS and EDC worked to address these issues. Please let us know if you experience difficulties or have concerns with cuLearn.

Thank you.

Update on the cuLearn upgrade /tls/2016/update-culearn-upgrade-2/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=update-culearn-upgrade-2&utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=update-culearn-upgrade-2 Wed, 21 Sep 2016 17:34:28 +0000 http://carleton.ca/ims/?p=4996 On September 3, the EDC and CCS updated cuLearn from Moodle version 2.8.7 to version 3.1.1. cuLearn is powered by Moodle, the most popular and powerful open source Learning Management System in the world. These annual upgrades help keep our cuLearn system current so that we are able to obtain support from the Moodle community. The upgrades also provide some enhanced performance and feature improvements.

Before this upgrade, we conducted extensive testing to ensure that there would be minimal disruption to instructors and students. While most of the upgrade went very well, with the help of several instructors we have identified three issues of some significance:

  • Grading assignments – slow page loads: When an instructor attempts to open a student assignment from the gradebook, the assignment page takes a long time to load. A workaround for this is to download student assignments as a zip file and edit/grade offline.
  • Restricting access permissions – cannot be modified or deleted: Restrict Access Permissions are conditions set up in a course that permit students to progress through a course based on achieving a particular benchmark. If instructors attempt to change or remove a condition, they receive an error message indicating that they are not able to complete the change. If you experience this, contact the EDC at edc@carleton.ca.
  • Uploading multiple feedback files – produces an empty field: When instructors attempt to upload multiple assignments with feedback to students from a zip file, the zip file appears to upload, but is in fact empty. The current workaround is to upload the edited files one at a time.

Currently, we are aware that these issues are impacting several instructors, but we wanted to keep you apprised of our efforts to resolve them. Our team is working diligently with external partners and our Moodle developer community to implement permanent fixes before these issues amplify.

If these issues or others are causing you or your students concern, we encourage you to contact the CCS Service Desk so that we can be made aware of all outstanding issues with cuLearn.

Thank you for your patience and support during this time.

Teaching Roundtable: When PoodLL Meets Moodle /tls/2015/teaching-roundtable-poodll-meets-moodle/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=teaching-roundtable-poodll-meets-moodle&utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=teaching-roundtable-poodll-meets-moodle Mon, 05 Jan 2015 16:34:06 +0000 http://carleton.ca/edc/?p=16121 On Jan. 23, join the EDC and Mike Barker from the School of Linguistics & Language Studies for a pizza lunch and an in-depth discussion about the possibilities that exist when PoodLL meets Moodle.

PoodLL is a collection of plugins for Moodle that greatly enhances the system’s ability to seamlessly incorporate audio and video functionality for both students and instructors. This session will showcase a number of these tools including:

  • Audio/video recording assignments
  • Audio/video instructor feedback
  • Real-time virtual pair work (or small group work) options
  • Inline audio/video
  • Flashcards

PoodLL is not currently installed on cuLearn. The purpose of this session is to demonstrate the possibilities these plugins offer and to encourage support for their inclusion. It is intended for instructors who can see an application for this technology in their courses and for technology specialists who want to see the plugin in action.

The roundtable will run from 12-1 p.m. in room 422 Dunton Tower. Space is limited so .
