Professor has been awarded a $26,218 grant from the Climate Social Science Network to carry out a research project titled 鈥淏locking the current: How incumbents obstruct electrification in heating, transport, and electricity sectors鈥.
Recognizing that electrification is emerging as the most credible pathway to realize net-zero transitions in multiple sectors, this project examines how incumbents seek to obstruct electrification across heating, transport, and electricity sectors in three Canadian provinces: Ontario, Alberta, and Qu茅bec. The project will analyze policy positions articulated by natural gas distributors, electricity utilities, and other incumbents during contemporary climate and energy policy consultations. Through this analysis, the project will not only identify incumbent positions about whether, how, and to what extent electrification should be pursued but also seek to confront obstruction by assessing whether proposed pathways represent dead-ends using a novel assessment tool co-developed with practitioners.
