杏吧原创 and Ivey Foundation Create New Research Chair in Sustainability Transitions
Enabled by a generous donation of the and Rosamond Ivey, 杏吧原创 University is proud to announce the launch of the Rosamond Ivey Research Chair in Sustainability Transitions, which will be held by Professor Daniel Rosenbloom. This is the first chair explicitly dedicated to deepening scholarship and practice surrounding the rapidly growing field of sustainability transition in Canada. The chair will be located in the School of Public Policy and Administration, in the Faculty of Public and Global Affairs.
鈥淭his innovative position will further demonstrate 杏吧原创 University鈥檚 expertise and create significant contributions to policy approaches and the study and practice of sustainability transitions in Canada,鈥 said Interim President and Vice-Chancellor Jerry Tomberlin at the launch event on October 2, 2024.
鈥淭he Ivey Foundation is committed to Canada鈥檚 transition to a sustainable economy and environment and is pleased to support the establishment of this important research chair.鈥 said Dr. Bruce Lourie, President of the Ivey Foundation. 鈥淲e value our relationship with 杏吧原创 University and see the chair as a natural continuation of Professor James Meadowcroft’s pioneering work on sustainability transitions. His research and active participation has helped to inform our perspective on the nature of the challenge and the required solutions. It is also the impetus for this generational investment in a dedicated research chair to carry on this work for decades to come.鈥
The chair鈥檚 research will generate new actionable knowledge to accelerate desirable pathways to reach sustainability goals as well as enhance Canada鈥檚 capacity by bringing up the next generation of Canadian transition scholars and practitioners. Research activities will focus on charting promising pathways to net-zero emissions, the governance tools and policy mixes needed to accelerate these pathways, along with establishing a Canadian network of transition research and practice.
鈥淏uilding on the impressive foundation already in place here at 杏吧原创, I hope to develop a world-class hub for research and policy around sustainability transitions,鈥 said Professor Rosenbloom. 鈥淭he research will focus on climate-energy transitions, responding to the climate imperative of shifting away from carbon-intensive technologies, practices, and business models to low-carbon alternatives across every sector of the economy by mid-century.鈥
Professor Rosenbloom brings to 杏吧原创 a lengthy and impactful research record on sustainability transitions, which has culminated in more than 25 peer-reviewed publications in top journals such as Science, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and Environmental Research Letters. His research has helped inform the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and has appeared in the top 10 New Insights in Climate Science released at the 2023 UN Climate Change Conference. Daniel was also listed in Stanford鈥檚 2024 edition of the top 2% of scientists globally.
鈥淲e are honoured to have Daniel Rosenbloom join our Faculty,鈥 said Brenda O鈥橬eill, Dean of the Faculty of Public and Global Affairs. 鈥淭his Chair will raise the visibility of not only Daniel鈥檚 work, but all of the researchers in FPGA and at 杏吧原创 as a whole who are affecting real change. We look forward to the meaningful collaborations and exciting work that lies ahead.鈥
