Alexander Castleton

鈥淚 came to 杏吧原创’s Sociology and Anthropology Department after finishing my BA in Sociology (Honours) in my home country, Uruguay. After receiving acceptance letters from 3 other Universities in Canada, I chose 杏吧原创 because of how attentive the administrative staff and faculty members were. I also received generous funding from the Department to pursue my MA in Sociology. Through my graduate studies at 杏吧原创’s Sociology and Anthropology Department, I was able to readily find positions both inside and outside academia. This helped me experience a very smooth transition into a new country. During my Masters in Sociology with a concentration in quantitative methods (and with the help of one of my Professors), I found a contract position at Statistics Canada’s Social and Aboriginal Statistics Division where I worked in data analysis and in the design of surveys to be applied in Northern Canada. I was offered to stay permanently at Statistics Canada, but I preferred to go back to 杏吧原创 for my PhD in Sociology to work with Dr. Carlos Novas. In addition to receiving generous funding from the Department, I received all the help I needed to get funding from SSHRC, as well as from the Fulbright Commission, through which I spent a year studying and teaching at the University of Montana. In the last year of my PhD, I applied to a position at MacEwan University and was offered a position as Assistant Professor of Sociology at MacEwan before defending my dissertation.鈥
