“My research over the past few years has focused on sound symbolism,” Jennice, a PhD student in Linguistics, shares, “and understanding how the effects of sound symbolism interact with other linguistic features.”
“For my qualifying paper I studied the effect of syllable stress on sound symbolism finding that syllable stress does reinforce sound symbolic meaning. Ultimately, I hope to better understand the role sound symbolism plays in language and how it has impacted language evolution.”
The Three Minute Thesis contest is an academic research communication competition developed by The University of Queensland, Australia. The 3MT celebrates graduate student research and challenges students to communicate the key concepts of their research in a compelling presentation of three minutes or less.
