Talking Chalk in Viña del Mar

In October 2018, Natasha Artemeva and her PhD student Chloë Fogarty-Bourget travelled to Viña del Mar, a suburb of Valparaiso, Chile, to take part in the Second International Workshop “Discourse, Multimodality and Experimental Methods” (). DMEM-2018 included nine presentations by the leading international scholars in cognitive multimodal research, nine workshops offered by these researchers, a poster session, and two flash-talk sessions for graduate students. Natasha and Chloë were the only participants from Canada. They were invited to present a co-authored poster. Chloë also presented a flash-talk in a session for graduate students. Chloë and Natasha showcased their research on chalk talk, the multimodal genre of teaching university mathematics. Chloë reported on her doctoral study of multimodal strategies used by university mathematics instructors to engage undergraduate students in doing mathematics in lecture classes. A book chapter based on Chloë and Natasha’s poster presentation is to be included in an edited collection based on DMEM-2018 presentations.

In addition to learning a lot about multimodal cognitive research and sharing their results with prominent scholars from all over the world, Chloë and Natasha had a chance to enjoy a few beautiful spring days and local wildlife (sea lions and pelicans).
