Language Students Hit the Stage for Linguavision 2018
Thanks to everyone who joined us for and participated in the 4th annual Linguavision Song Competition on Monday evening. This year鈥檚 show featured 18 performances in 8 different languages and a range of genres from Julian鈥檚 machine-gun delivery of Frederic鈥檚 fast-paced 鈥淥ddloop鈥, to Euan鈥檚 bilingual acoustic rendition of 鈥淚 only care about you鈥 in Japanese/Mandarin, and Elif鈥檚 emotional treatment of K-Pop tune 鈥淏reathe鈥. Also surprising was the number of performers – exactly 50% – who played their own instruments!

It certainly wasn鈥檛 the optimal timing for the rescheduled event landing, as it did, in the middle of exams, so it was great to see such a supportive crowd out to cheer on the singers.
Prizes were awarded in two separate categories: original songs and open category (covers of existing songs).

Original Category:
- 1st Prize: Sarah Howard (French) for her original song 鈥淒es fois鈥
- 2nd Prize: Liam McPherson (French) for his original song 鈥淭rois-cent pieds dans les airs鈥
- 3rd Prize: Liam Hoselton (German) for his original song 鈥淒as Wunderscho虉nste Ding鈥
Open Category:
- 1st Prize: Katie Russell (Spanish)
- 2nd Prize: Tarah Lemours (Korean)
- 3rd Prize: Omar Garcia Flores (Mandarin Chinese)
- Honourable Mention: Yang Na (Japanese)
- Honourable Mention: Hooman Aghabeigi (English)
Audience Choice Awards:
- V & J (English)
- Emily (Korean)
Thanks also to all the volunteers who helped make the event run so smoothly, to emcee (and past performer) Charles Bougard for keeping things moving along, to our diverse multilingual panel of judges, and to the secret special guests – the Esperanto Circle – who appeared onstage as part of the music trivia quiz. Speaking of which, congratulations to 鈥淢omo鈥, the pseudonymous winner of the quiz!
And, of course, thanks to our institutional sponsors: School of Linguistics & Language Studies, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, Department of French, and School for Studies in Art & Culture.
