Maureen A. McTeer
Lawyer, author and women’s rights advocate, Maureen McTeer, will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, at the 2 p.m ceremony on Wednesday, June 9, “in recognition of her contributions to women’s equality and rights within Canada and internationally, as well as her advancement of health and medical issues.
She is an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Common Law at the University of Ottawa and a Distinguished Scholar in Residence in the Department of Government at the School of Public Affairs in the Women and Politics Institute and at the Washington College of Law at American University in Washington, D.C.
Ms. McTeer was active in the successful campaign to have gender equality guaranteed in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. She ran for Parliament and was a member of Canada’s Royal Commission on New Reproductive Technologies, and proposing a regulatory framework for new reproductive and genetic technologies, proposing a regulatory framework for new reproductive and genetic technologies.
She is a leading advocate for maternal health as a human night and promotes the United Nations Millennium Development Goals as the Canadian representative of the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood and the public member of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada
She has received the Governor General’s Award in commemoration of the Persons case and the Canada 125 medal for her contributions to women’s health and equality.
