lan Hacking is a Canadian philosopher who specializes in the philosophy of science. He has worked at Cambridge University, Stanford University, the University of Toronto, where he was a University Professor, and at the Collage de France in Paris, where he held the chair of philosophy and history of scientific concepts.
His numerous published works, which have generated new fields of research and reflection, include Logic of Statistical Inference (1965), The Emergence of Probability (1975), and The Taming of Chance (1990).
Among his many honours, Mr. Hacking was named a Companion of the Order of Canada in 2004, and has received honorary degrees from Cordaba (Argentina), the University of British Columbia, McMaster University and the University of Toronto. In 2008, he received the Gold Medal for Achievement in Research, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, Canada.
