  • Pascal: One of the most important early Macintosh development languages. THINK Pascal, MPW Pascal, and Turbo Pascal were available, and much of Apple’s early Macintosh documentation and API culture was Pascal-oriented.
  • C: Widely used for commercial Macintosh software and system-level programming. Popular development systems included LightSpeed C, later renamed THINK C, plus MPW C and Hippo-C.
  • Motorola 68000 assembly language: Used for low-level programming, hardware access, compact code, and speed-critical routines. Apple’s Macintosh Programmer’s Workshop (MPW) supplied serious development tools, including an assembler.
  • BASIC: Microsoft BASIC and third-party BASIC implementations could run on the Mac. BASIC was accessible for learning and utilities, although it was less central to Macintosh development than Pascal and C.
  • HyperTalk: HyperCard’s approachable scripting language. • “FDHD” meant Floppy Disk High Density: the Macintosh SE FDHD was essentially an 8 MHz Macintosh SE revised with Apple’s 1.44 MB high-density floppy drive, replacing the earlier 800 KB mechanism.
• Its celebrated feature was the SuperDrive: it could use 400 KB, 800 KB, and 1.44 MB Macintosh disks, while also reading and writing 720 KB/1.44 MB MS-DOS, OS/2, and ProDOS disks. This made it an unusually practical bridge between Macintosh, IBM-PC-compatible, and Apple II file ecosystems.
• It was later renamed the Macintosh SE SuperDrive, not a new model, but the same FDHD-era SE under Apple’s more marketable name. Collectors may encounter either “FDHD” or “SuperDrive” on the front bezel.
• The machine used the SWIM chip (“Super Woz Integrated Machine”) to control its high-density drive. This was a genuine hardware revision: a standard SE’s disk-control circuitry could not simply accept a 1.44 MB drive as an upgrade.
• Its most important “first” was not a new CPU or display but a turning point in media compatibility: the SuperDrive helped make 1.44 MB HD floppies the shared practical standard across Macs and PCs in the early 1990s.
• It preserved the compact Mac’s distinctive 9-inch black-and-white all-in-one form while offering a PDS expansion slot, an internal hard-drive bay, SCSI, ADB, and a cooling fan, the SE family’s shift from the closed Macintosh Plus appliance toward an expandable office computer.
• Its name is often misread as “Special Edition,” but on the Macintosh SE, “SE” officially stood for System Expansion, referring to its expansion capability. The later FDHD suffix specifically identified the high-density floppy upgrade.
• Its historical irony is that it arrived in 1989 alongside the much faster Macintosh SE/30. The FDHD improved interchange and storage capacity, whereas the SE/30 brought a far more powerful 68030 processor, so the FDHD is remembered as the practical compatibility upgrade, not the performance legend.
• Period messaging emphasized working with files from “other computers”: Apple positioned the FDHD as an office-friendly Macintosh for mixed-platform workplaces, advertising disk compatibility rather than revolutionary graphical computing.
• For collectors, the front-panel label is the simplest clue: an original SE typically lacks the suffix, while the revised machines are visibly marked “FDHD” or “SuperDrive.”
