Invitation to participate in a research project on Using Interactive Fiction to Explore Student Attitudes towards Immigration. /scs/2025/invitation-to-participate-in-a-research-project-on-using-interactive-fiction-to-explore-student-attitudes-towards-immigration/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=invitation-to-participate-in-a-research-project-on-using-interactive-fiction-to-explore-student-attitudes-towards-immigration Thu, 21 Aug 2025 19:41:09 +0000 /scs/?p=22117

My name is Diksha Kale, and I am a PhD candidate in the Department of Law and Legal Studies at 杏吧原创 University. I am working on a research project under the supervision of Dr. Stacy Douglas. If you are a current 杏吧原创 University student (graduate or undergraduate), I am inviting you to participate in a study entitled听鈥淟eaving Home: Using Interactive Fiction to Explore Student Attitudes towards Immigration鈥. This study aims to offer an interactive, educational experience which can help users understand the challenges related to immigration and xenophobia.

The study involves an Interactive Fiction (IF) short story (with 30 minutes to 1 hour of playtime) that places the participant in the role of a fictional immigrant who must leave their homeland to pursue their education. If you choose to participate in the study, your answers to the survey questions at the end of the game will be recorded digitally and stored on a secure file. The survey will focus on questions related to your perceptions of the different themes in the story both before and after playing, and feedback on the different aspects of the IF story to make it more accessible and impactful. Since the study is conducted online entirely, your physical presence in any specific location for this study is not required.

As part of the project, due care will be taken to protect your identity. Your data will be anonymized using a pseudonym. You will be given a list of available pseudonyms from which you can choose one for yourself. The pseudonym will be used instead of your real name when presenting the data to an audience. You will have the right to end your participation in the study at any time, for any reason. If you want your data to be removed from the study, then you must withdraw from the study before October 16, 2025.

As a token of appreciation, each participant will receive $25 via e-transfer. Please note that the compensation is not available to participants who withdraw from the study before completion of the assigned tasks. The compensation will be provided to participants upon successful completion of the tasks assigned to them for the project i.e., playing the IF story up to three times, and answering all the survey questions at the end of each gameplay by September 30, 2025. All research data, including the survey responses and your personal information, will be stored in password-protected files. Research data will only be accessible by the researcher and the faculty research supervisor.

If you would like to participate in this research project, or have any questions about the research, please contact me at听dikshakale@cmail.carleton.ca.

New MCS: Non-Thesis Pathway /scs/2025/new-mcs-non-thesis-pathway/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=new-mcs-non-thesis-pathway Mon, 24 Mar 2025 18:09:13 +0000 /scs/?p=20806 The new Master of Computer Science: Non-Thesis Pathway* at 杏吧原创 offers flexible options, allowing students to choose between coursework-only OR a combination of coursework and a graduate project.

This 5.0 credit program requires students to complete the following:

Chart of non-thesis MCS pathway

*Important

  • Thesis students with funding who wish to switch to the Non-Thesis pathway may lose all or part of their funding.
  • Non-Thesis pathway students seeking to do the coursework and graduate project option, should not begin working on their graduate project until they have found a supervisor. Additionally, registration in COMP 5903 (Graduate Project) will not be permitted until the student can prove they have secured a supervisor. Continuous registration in COMP 5903 is required until the graduate project is completed. This includes registration in the summer term.
  • Non-Thesis, coursework-only pathway students do not require a supervisor.
  • This program pathway will be viewable in the 2025-26 Graduate Calendar, which will be released in early May 2025.

Promoting Resiliency in Young Women through Accessible & Tailored Mental Health Supports /scs/2025/promoting-resiliency-in-young-women-through-accessible-tailored-mental-health-supports/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=promoting-resiliency-in-young-women-through-accessible-tailored-mental-health-supports Fri, 21 Feb 2025 20:27:12 +0000 /scs/?p=20608 A new research study has begun recruitment!

They are currently recruiting women in Ontario between the ages of 18-25 who experience loneliness, depression and substance use. They are looking to determine the differences in treatment between two virtual group therapy methods; Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Depression (CBTd) and a new psychotherapy method called 鈥楪roups for Health鈥 (G4H) developed by researchers in Australia. G4H uses the basis that strong support systems and social connectedness can increase mental and physical well-being on women with depression, increased loneliness, and who might use substances as a coping mechanism.

As a participant, students would be asked to complete 5 virtual group psychotherapy sessions that are expected to last around 75-90 minutes in length, 3 clinical questionnaire assessments and two mail-in cortisol saliva kits. Students would also be compensated for their time and effort.

This is an important research project as it will bring free, virtual, easily accessible therapy methods for depression, loneliness and substance use to our 杏吧原创 Community. The results of this study could have a strong impact on psychotherapy services in the future.
