MASc Students Win Best Paper Award at International IEEE Symposium

Alec Cotton and Kade MacWilliams, MASc students in the Department, have been awarded Best Conference Paper at the IEEE International Symposium on Medical Measurements and Applications 2026, held in Montevideo.

Their award-winning paper, “Step-Wise Feature Selection for Surgical Gesture Recognition,” was co-authored with James R. Green, Ahmed Nasr, Georges Azzie, and Carlos Rossa.

This prestigious recognition highlights the team’s innovative contributions to medical measurement technologies and surgical data analysis. Their work advances the development of intelligent systems for recognizing surgical gestures, with potential applications in improving training, assessment, and outcomes in healthcare.
