Lots of political staffers think about it, but what is it really like to move from being the advisor/aide to being the candidate for office?

The MPM Program was delighted to host this conversation with a multi-partisan panel featuring Karim Bardeesy, M.P. (Taiaiako’n—Parkdale—High Park), the Hon. Jennifer Howard (previously Minister of Finance in Manitoba), and Melissa Lantsman, M.P. (Thornhill), in conversation with moderator Garry Keller (StrategyCorp, 2025 federal candidate for Nipissing-Timiskaming).

The panel was the centrepiece of the 2026 Riddell Reception, a regular event in the MPM calendar organized by MPM students. View the event .

This year’s Reception welcomed more than 200 members of the MPM community for a lively discussion that was later featured in .

Recognizing Excellence: Venus Ramos Awarded Two Graduate Awards /politicalmanagement/2026/recognizing-excellence-venus-ramos-awarded-two-graduate-awards/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=recognizing-excellence-venus-ramos-awarded-two-graduate-awards Mon, 16 Mar 2026 12:58:50 +0000 /politicalmanagement/?p=6780 photo of Venus Ramos

Venus Ramos, MPM Gradute Student

The Master of Political Management program is delighted to congratulate Venus Ramos, one of our outstanding graduate students, on receiving two graduate awards in recognition of her dedication, academic excellence, and exceptional performance in the program.

I am honoured to be recognized through these scholarships, which make graduate studies more accessible for me. As a first-generation student in my family, both at the undergraduate and master’s level, it truly means a lot.

While I have worked in politics for a few years, the MPM has accelerated my learning and continues to fill gaps in my knowledge. It has shown me the power of interdisciplinary thinking through my cohort, who come from different backgrounds, and most importantly, how we can make politics more approachable through the way we write, communicate, and lead.

Venus is the recipient of the J. Carlisle Hanson Award* and the Dr. Thomas Betz Award**. We are proud to celebrate her success and the hard work that continues to make our MPM community shine.

*Awarded annually, by the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdcotoral Affairs, on the recommendation of the graduate supervisor of the Clayton H. Riddell Graduate Program in Political Management, the J. Carlisle Hanson award is to recognize an outstanding graduate student enrolled in courses related to Political Management and Media. The award was endowed in 2010 by J. Carlisle Hanson, Q.C.

**Established in 1990 by family, friends, and colleagues in memory of Dr. Thomas Betz, this award is open to undergraduate and graduate students, and is awarded annually, on the basis of scholarly promise and potential for intellectual leadership.

Meet Jennifer Howard, Newly Appointed Program Fellow /politicalmanagement/2026/meet-jennifer-howard-newly-appointed-program-fellow/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=meet-jennifer-howard-newly-appointed-program-fellow Tue, 06 Jan 2026 16:09:21 +0000 /politicalmanagement/?p=6692 We are thrilled to ring in the New Year by welcoming Jennifer Howard as our newly appointed MPM Program Fellow!

Jennifer brings over two decades of exceptional experience in Canadian politics, spanning both provincial and federal levels. As a former Manitoba MLA and Cabinet minister, she championed groundbreaking legislation including Manitoba’s first accessibility standards and North America’s first paid employment leave for domestic violence victims. Her leadership continued as Executive Director of PSAC, where she supported federal workers through the Phoenix pay crisis, and most recently as Chief of Staff to NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, where she helped secure the Supply and Confidence Agreement that delivered Canada’s Dental Care Program.

Recognized by the Hill Times in 2024 as one of the 100 most influential people in federal politics, Jennifer’s depth of expertise will be invaluable to our MPM community.

Doris Mah with Mayor Mike Hurley, City of Burnaby

Stand With Asians Coalition (SWAC) co-founder, Doris Mah, accepts the City of Burnaby’s Official Apology for its historic discrimination against people of Chinese descent. Mah and Stand With Asians Coalition contributed to the City’s reconciliation projects, such as the Rooted book. In February 2023, Burnaby City Council approved a process to review, acknowledge and apologize for its historic discrimination against people of Chinese descent, to advance reconciliation with the Chinese Canadian community.

I am deeply grateful to stand with Chinese Canadians in Burnaby as we receive the City’s official apology for its historic discrimination against people of Chinese descent. I am honoured to be included because of my work addressing anti-Asian racism, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic in Burnaby and across Canada. This apology marks an important milestone in recognition and reconciliation, strengthening our shared commitment to equity, equality, inclusion and justice. I look forward to continued efforts to honour Chinese Canadian history and reduce barriers for future generations.

MPM ‘16 graduate, Hunter Doubt, takes the helm on Canadian GR & Public Policy for Canada’s leading AI firm Cohere /politicalmanagement/2025/mpm-16-graduate-hunter-doubt-takes-the-helm-on-canadian-gr-public-policy-for-canadas-leading-ai-firm-cohere/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=mpm-16-graduate-hunter-doubt-takes-the-helm-on-canadian-gr-public-policy-for-canadas-leading-ai-firm-cohere Tue, 11 Nov 2025 15:26:50 +0000 /politicalmanagement/?p=6607 hunter doubtWhen the Government of Canada signed an MOU with Canadian multinational AI company Cohere Inc. in mid-August, news of the agreement sparked a wave of conversations and speculation throughout the nation’s capital related to how it would work and who would be at the table to bring the agreement to life.

As the government’s press release on the signing states, “artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to significantly improve government operations and services for Canadians.” By partnering with the home-grown large-language model developer in Cohere Inc., the Government of Canada is “seeking to harness the power of this transformative technology while building a vibrant made-in-Canada technology sector.”

This endeavour represents a significant change and new challenge; one that will break new ground in digital government, service innovation and public-private partnership.

It was therefore no surprise to the MPM community to see one of our own, Hunter Doubt (MPM ‘16), taking on a new role for the company as Senior Manager for Government Affairs and Public Policy. In this position, Hunter will help support the steering of these efforts in Ottawa and across the country as governments and private enterprises work to safely and securely harness AI adoption.

Hunter most recently served as Head of Government and Corporate Affairs (Canada and Caribbean) for the multinational online travel agency Expedia Group, and prior to that as a Director at the consulting firm Global Public Affairs. Since 2024, Hunter has also been President of the Board of Directors for the Government Relations Institute of Canada (GRIC), the national non-for-profit association representing government relations and public affairs practitioners in Canada.

Hunter credits much of his career development to his time in the MPM.

The MPM program provided me with such a strong foundation in the skills and knowledge necessary to build a successful career in government relations. I credit the program, its network, and the opportunities it provided me for helping me get to where I am today. I couldn’t be more proud to be part of such an exceptional alumnus from such an exceptional program.

Since graduating, Hunter has remained an active member of the MPM network. For the last two years, GRIC and the Public Affairs Association of Canada (PAAC) have generously sponsored a scholarship for eligible MPM students interested in graduating and working in government relations and public affairs.

I look forward to championing this program for years to come in any way possible.
