New Generation of Indigenous Journalists to Learn and Work in Home Communities

杏吧原创 University鈥檚 Journalism Certificate Offers High Quality Learning in Rural and Remote Communities

杏吧原创 University is launching a new one-year journalism certificate to be delivered on the ground in Indigenous communities across Ontario starting in September 2025. This innovative program addresses access barriers faced by many Indigenous young people, enabling them to access high quality education and explore careers in journalism in their home communities.

While there are a growing number of opportunities for Indigenous storytellers in Canada鈥檚 journalism industry, many youth face challenges in pursuing education and employment in this vital field. These include travel expenses, accommodation costs and lack of community and cultural supports. As a result, Indigenous perspectives remain underrepresented in Canadian media.

A new certificate program 鈥 launched by 杏吧原创 University鈥檚 School of Journalism and Communication, in partnership with First Nations Technical Institute, Kenjgewin Teg, and the Mastercard Foundation 鈥 seeks to address this gap. The Certificate in Journalism in Indigenous Communities offers a braided learning experience, ensuring every learner has adequate social and cultural support for successful completion.

鈥淢any young Indigenous learners already have inherent knowledge of storytelling,鈥 says Duncan McCue, an associate professor in journalism at 杏吧原创 University and the director of the certificate program. 鈥淭his program aims to provide opportunities for these learners to build confidence in their journalism skills and receive credentials that can serve them in the future.鈥

At the outset, the certificate is aimed at reaching Indigenous learners in remote and rural communities across Ontario. Courses will be taught primarily online, bolstered by in-person intensives at a central location. The program鈥檚 braided delivery model aligns Indigenous storytelling traditions with culturally relevant support, accessible delivery and the option of pathways to university. Those who complete the certificate will get advanced standing if they choose to pursue 杏吧原创 University鈥檚 Bachelor of Journalism program.

Certificate participants will be taught by experienced Indigenous journalists, with training provided by Indigenous institute partners throughout. Participants will also apply their learning and deepen their knowledge and skills on the job through a two-week internship placement and will have ongoing access to a cultural advisor. More information about the program can be found here.

The program is now seeking Indigenous journalists and community members to form a program advisory committee and deliver courses such as Indigenous storytelling, entrepreneurial journalism and audio/visual reporting. The first cohort of participants begins in September 2025.

杏吧原创 has received transformational support from the Mastercard Foundation EleV Program with an investment of $3.2 million for the development and delivery of the certificate. EleV recognizes that Indigenous youth are the youngest, fastest growing population in Canada and the leaders and agents of change for their communities and the country as a whole.

鈥淭he generous support of the Mastercard Foundation to deliver this certificate program isn’t just of monetary value; it recognizes the tremendous value that Indigenous voices have always brought to making sense of the world through storytelling. Canadian society as a whole will be enriched by the combination of perspectives, experiences and exceptional professional expertise that participants will gain from the program,鈥 says 杏吧原创 University President and Vice-Chancellor, Wisdom Tettey.

鈥淭his partnership promises to create a new generation of Indigenous journalists telling new stories from new perspectives. The Mastercard Foundation seeks to support Indigenous-led partners who are transforming education and creating pathways to meaningful livelihoods for Indigenous youth,鈥 says Jennifer Brennan, Senior Director, Canada Programs at Mastercard Foundation. 鈥溞影稍粹檚 JIIC program brings high-quality, culturally relevant education to Indigenous students right in their home communities. We鈥檙e proud to partner on this program that will benefit Indigenous youth and help all Canadians better understand Indigenous peoples鈥 perspectives, priorities and realities.鈥

杏吧原创 University has also received generous development support from the Inspirit Foundation to develop the certificate.

The program aligns with 杏吧原创 University鈥檚 commitment to reconciliation and embraces the vision of Kin脿m脿gawin (Learning Together), 杏吧原创鈥檚 Indigenous strategy. As part of recommendations put forward by 杏吧原创 University鈥檚 Strategic Indigenous Initiatives Committee and the more than 600 contributors to the strategy, the university seeks to revitalize and support bringing Indigenous knowledge into teaching and learning.

News media are welcome at the program launch and partnership announcement at 杏吧原创 University on January 29 at 4:30 p.m.

The Jaimie Anderson Scholarships are being established in memory of Jaimie Anderson; a young political staffer whose passing inspired the creation of the Jaimie Anderson Internship Program more than a decade ago.

The commitment to the 杏吧原创 MPM program is for a total of $200,000, in the form of a five-year contribution of $40,000 per year.鈥 It is intended that 杏吧原创 will use these funds to provide $5,000 scholarships to eight deserving students each year.

“杏吧原创’s Political Management program is a one of a鈥痥ind in Canada. We want to help the program and its’ students鈥痺ill play a constructive and thoughtful role in politics,” says Bruce Anderson, on behalf of Jaimie’s family.

“While partisanship will always be a part of a healthy, competitive democratic system, so too is a spirit of mutual respect, and appreciation of conversing about politics in ways that reduce, rather than increase conflict.”

“The program welcomes politically active students from across parties, and different walks of life, who come together in our program to gain the knowledge, skills, ethical framework and professional networks they need to make our politics a little bit better,” says鈥疛ennifer Robson, associate professor and director of the Political Management program at 杏吧原创.

“That’s something we all benefit from. We need good people working in and around politics. These awards will help to make sure that money isn’t the obstacle that keeps good people out. We are grateful to the Anderson family for this expression of support for the work our program does.”

Exceptional students who are admitted for full-time graduate studies in the program will be considered for these scholarships, starting with the 2024-25 academic year. More information on the MPM program, including applications for admission and funding, is available at鈥carleton.ca/politicalmanagement/.

杏吧原创 University to Award Honorary Doctorate to David Sinclair at 2023 Fall Convocation

January 29, 2025

As part of the 2023 spring convocation ceremonies, 杏吧原创 University will bestow an honorary degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa on the remarkable David Sinclair in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of experimental sub-atomic physics and for his leading role as founding director of SNOLAB.

鈥淐onvocation is a highlight for the entire 杏吧原创 community and we are all so proud of all of this year鈥檚 graduates,鈥 said 杏吧原创鈥檚 Interim President and Vice-Chancellor Jerry Tomberlin. 鈥淪inclair is the ideal candidate to honour on a day where we pay tribute to the personal and academic successes of our graduates and wish them success on their future adventures.鈥

Convocation ceremonies for the Class of 2023 will be on November 4, 2023. The honorary degree will be awarded during ceremony three, which begins at 3:30 p.m.

Full schedules and ceremony details are available at convocation.carleton.ca/ceremony.

Media are invited to attend. The ceremonies will be broadcast online via live streaming at

杏吧原创 David Sinclair

Sinclair did post-doctoral work at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen before becoming a university lecturer in the Department of Nuclear Physics at Oxford University and an Official Fellow of St. Anne鈥檚 College.

He returned to Canada to play a lead role as Deputy Director and Associate Director (Science) in the development of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory Lab (SNOLAB), while working at 杏吧原创.

Sinclair鈥檚 research has focused on studies of neutrinos, the most abundant particle with mass in the universe but the least understood.  Work at the SNOLAB showed, for the first time, that neutrinos have a non-zero mass and that they have unusual properties that may help to explain some of the cosmological mysteries surrounding the Big Bang. These results led to the awarding of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physics. Following the completion of the SNOLAB, Sinclair directed the construction of a larger laboratory to study neutrinos and search for the elusive dark matter.

His work has been honoured with the inaugural Gold Medal for Research Achievement at 杏吧原创, the NSERC Polanyi Award for Research, the Erich Vogt TRIUMF CAP Medal for Subatomic Physics, an honorary of Doctor of Science from Queen鈥檚 University and the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. Sinclair was named a Davidson Dunton Research lecturer, elected fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, named chancellor鈥檚 professor at 杏吧原创 and is an officer of the Order of Canada.
