Three 杏吧原创 Community Members Appointed to the Order of Canada
Three esteemed 杏吧原创 University community members have been named to the . Recognized for their inspiring contributions to Canada and the world, the newest 杏吧原创 community appointees include leaders in public policy, finance and technology.

William Janzen, (MA/70, PhD/81), was named a Member of the Order. Janzen is an alumnus of 杏吧原创鈥檚 Faculty of Public Affairs, having completed both a master鈥檚 degree of and a PhD in Political Science.
Having served as the Director of the Ottawa office of the Mennonite Central Committee Canada for more than 30 years, Janzen has been recognized for his influence on public policy, including his role in the creation of the Government of Canada鈥檚 Private Sponsorship of Refugees program, and his contributions to 鈥渞efugee resettlement, citizenship, development aid and peace building.鈥
Monique Forget Leroux, (ALHD/21), was promoted to Companion of the Order. In 2021, 杏吧原创 awarded Leroux the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, in recognition of her accomplished leadership in the world of business and her service as an inspiring role model and mentor to subsequent generations.
Leroux is the president and CEO of Desjardins Group. Her promotion recognizes her role as a leading figure in Canadian finance, her international representation of Canada on multinational groups and committees, as well as her support of initiatives 鈥渄edicated to education, youth and the arts.鈥
Jozef Straus, (ALHD/10), was named an Officer of the Order. In 2010, 杏吧原创 awarded Straus the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa, in recognition of his contributions in the fields of nuclear physics and mechanical engineering.
Straus is the co-founder of JDS FITEL, and former CEO and co-chair of JDS Uniphase. He has been recognized for his key role in the development of Canada鈥檚 high-tech industry and innovations in data communications and fibre-optic technology, as well as his philanthropy to causes supporting 鈥渕arginalized communities, the arts, education, science, health and nature.鈥

Established in 1967 by Queen Elizabeth, the is the pillar of the . Becoming a member recognizes outstanding contributions at the local or regional level or in a special field of activity. The Order of Canada is one of the country鈥檚 highest civilian honours with three levels of appointment: companion, officer and member.
On June 27, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, announced 83 new appointments to the Order of Canada. Recipients will be invested at a ceremony to held at a later date.
