Dr. Jerry Tomberlin takes the reins at ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ as Interim President and Vice-Chancellor
ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´’s former Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Dr. Jerry Tomberlin will formally assume the role of Interim President and Vice-Chancellor on September 1, 2023 as the Board of Governors conducts a search for the university’s next president. This follows the announcement earlier this summer that, after five years, outgoing President and Vice-Chancellor Benoit-Antoine Bacon is leaving to become President and Vice-Chancellor at the University of British Columbia.
“I am honoured to have the opportunity to continue to serve ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´’s smart, caring community,” said Tomberlin.
“ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ has strong momentum and I look forward to working with both the campus and external community to ensure that we continue to challenge what’s possible in teaching, learning and research, and providing the type of student experience the university is renowned for.”

“We are fortunate to have someone of Dr. Tomberlin’s unique talents and experience,” said Board Chair Greg Farrell.
“ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ has made tremendous progress over the past few years and his background and time with the university will ensure that continues.”
ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ has soared over the past five years, with many accomplishments including the development and implementation of a Strategic Integrated Plan, a marked increase in research funding and student success, an elevated national profile and reputation, a refreshed campus master plan, and several new buildings. ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ has also distinguished itself with considerable progress in sustainability, community engagement, Indigenous initiatives, as well as equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Tomberlin, who holds a PhD in Statistics from Harvard and a Master of Public Health in Biostatistics from Michigan, served as Provost and Vice-President (Academic) between 2017 and 2023 and Dean of the Sprott School of Business between 2008 and 2017 and was also previously the Chair of the Board of the Canadian Federation of Business School Deans. Prior to joining the Sprott School of Business in 2008, Tomberlin held a variety of positions in the John Molson School of Business at Concordia University in Montreal, including Dean, Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies as well as External Affairs, Department Chair and Academic Director of the MBA program. In addition to Concordia, he has taught at the University of Southampton in England, Baruch College of the City University of New York, and l’École Supérieur des Sciences Économiques et Commerciales in France.
Tomberlin also has considerable private-sector experience, providing consulting services to a number of major corporations and organizations, including NASA, General Motors, The Royal Bank, Transports Québec and Statistics Canada.
