杏吧原创 University鈥檚 School of Computer Science Prof. Yuhong Guo has been named to the (CIFAR)
鈥淏eing named as a CIFAR AI Chair is an incredible opportunity to continue collaborating with the brightest minds in the country while contributing to impactful research on a global scale,鈥 said Guo. 鈥淚t is a wonderful honour to be selected for this role.鈥
Guo was selected for her contributions to the field of artificial intelligence, with her primary area of research in machine learning, working towards automating the learning process and reducing the dependence of learning systems on human guidance.
鈥淚 am looking forward to stepping into this role and supporting CIFAR鈥檚 research goals alongside my talented colleagues,鈥 Guo adds.
Guo joined 杏吧原创 as a professor and a (CRC) in July 2016. Over the past five years, Guo established an exceptional and independent research program and demonstrated strong leadership in the area of AI.
Guo鈥檚 leadership is evident in her role organizing a local scientific society, in the National Capital Region of Canada, and establishing and -funded collaborative research projects with industry and government organizations.
In addition to a successful , and a , Guo is a co-applicant on a recently awarded grant.
CIFAR is a Canadian-based global research organization that convenes extraordinary minds to address the most important questions facing science and humanity. The organization is supported by the governments of Canada, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec, as well as international partner organizations, individuals, foundations and corporations.
In 2017, the Government of Canada appointed CIFAR to develop and lead a $125-million Pan-Canadian AI Strategy鈥攖he world鈥檚 first national AI strategy. The program is the cornerstone of the strategy with the objectives being to:
- Attract and retain world-class AI researchers by increasing the number of outstanding AI researchers and skilled graduates in Canada.
- Foster a collaborative AI ecosystem by establishing interconnected nodes of scientific excellence in Canada鈥檚 three major centres for AI: Edmonton, Montreal, and Toronto.
- Advance national AI initiatives by supporting a national research community on AI through training programs, workshops, and other collaborative opportunities.
- Understand the societal implications of AI by developing global thought leadership on the economic, ethical, policy, and legal implications of advances in AI.
Currently, more than 90 Canada CIFAR AI Chairs are advancing research in a range of fundamental and applied AI topics from drug discovery and machine learning for health, autonomous vehicles, materials discovery, human-AI interaction, natural language, predication and more.
