Nine 杏吧原创 University Projects Receive Funding from NSERC Alliance COVID-19 Grants
Nine 杏吧原创 University projects received a total of $450,000 from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Alliance COVID-19 Grants to support a broad range of work, involving collaborations with the public, not-for-profit sectors and industry to address pandemic-related research and technical challenges.
鈥淒uring this global pandemic, 杏吧原创 researchers have taken swift action to collaborate with partners in all sectors to find innovative ways to secure the wellness of Canadians,鈥 said Rafik Goubran, vice-president (Research and International). 鈥淲e thank NSERC for their timely support of these vital projects.鈥
杏吧原创 researchers who are receiving support include:
- Kyle Biggar, professor in the Department of Biology, in partnership with Zim Corporation, for the project COVID-19: Annotating and Controlling the Inter-Species Protein Interactome through the Development of Peptide Inhibitors for SARS-CoV-2 and Human Protein Interactions.
- Burak Gunay, professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, in partnership with CISCO and Sensible Building Science, for the project A Wi-Fi-Based Occupancy Sensing, Modelling, and Simulation Method to Ensure COVID-19 Ventilation and Social Distancing Norms at Workplaces.
- Farah Hosseinian, professor in Department of Chemistry, in partnership with Healthcare Food Services, for the project Low Frequency High Power Ultrasound: Platform to Develop Fabricated Double Emulsions Improving Food Safety for Dysphagia Throughout COVID-19.
- Jeremy Laliberte, professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, in partnership with Romaeris and Sky Canoe, for the project Decontamination of Delivery Drone Aircraft Used in Remote and Rural Locations.
- Liam O’Brien, professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, in partnership with Hydro Ottawa and the Ottawa Community Housing Corporation(OCHC), for the project Pre- and Post-COVID-19 Household Energy Data Analysis to Support Utility and Property Management Policy.
- Wei Shi, professor in the School of Computer Science, in partnership with Orbiseed Technology Inc., for the project A Secure and Privacy-Preserving Contact Tracing System for the Covid-19 Pandemic.
- Gabriel Wainer, professor in the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering, in partnership with Solace Systems Inc., for the project Platform for Simulation and Analysis of Spread of COVID-19 in Buildings.
- Wainer, in partnership with Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC), for the project Integration of Analytical COVID-19 Models for Remote Execution and Advanced Visualization for Improved Decision-Making.
- Alex Wong, professor in the Department of Biology, in partnership with Arkalumen Inc and the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), for the project Evaluation of Ultraviolet-C Decontamination of Medical Masks During the COVID-19 Crisis.
NSERC supports more than 11,000 world-class researchers across Canada and funds their research collaborations with more than 4,000 companies. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, NSERC is leveraging the expertise of researchers in natural science and engineering and their partners across Canada to address this unprecedented crisis.
NSERC is providing up to $15 million in total support to stimulate collaborations between academic researchers and the public, not-for-profit sectors and industry to address pandemic-related research and technical challenges.
