February 4, 2020

ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ University’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is hosting a series of expert panels to explore the many factors – from climate and housing to youth and art – that make a healthy city in 2020. The five-part series continues with its second panel: Nature in the City.

When: Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2020, at 7 p.m.
Where:
ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ Dominion-Chalmers Centre, 355 Cooper Street, Ottawa
Info:
Registration is available online.

Media are invited to attend this event.

Panel experts include Prof. John Zelenski, Department of Psychology, Prof. Joanna Dean, Department of History, and Prof. Paul Villeneuve, School of Mathematics and Statistics. Prof. Patricia Ballamingie, Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, will moderate the panel.

Villeneuve will discuss his research on the Central Experimental Farm, including the role it has in reducing air pollution and extreme heat.  Villeneuve will examine the biodiversity of greenery across Canadian cities and how this can impact health.

In her talk, Dean will explore the history of Ottawa’s appreciation for the benefits of trees and how it has waxed and waned over time. Dean will share her analysis of Ottawa’s tree canopy cover over time using historical aerial photographs and other visual documentation.

Zelenski studies happiness and how people’s experiences with nature are linked to well-being and sustainable behaviours. He will discuss people’s subjective sense of connection with nature and explore theories on why nature might be good for people. He will also present his research demonstrating that Ottawa residents are happier in neighbourhoods which have a greater diversity of birds.
