杏吧原创 Researcher Receives Funding from CIHR to Investigate Impact of Changes to Canada鈥檚 Public Health System

June 9, 2020

杏吧原创 University researcher Mehdi Ammi in the School of Public Policy and Administration has received $200,000 from the  (CIHR) to support an investigation into how changes to the public health system over the years have impacted the health of Canadians.

鈥淐IHR funding enables 杏吧原创 to extend its already strong complement of health-related research,鈥 said Rafik Goubran, vice-president (Research and International). This world-class research will lead to a better-informed government and will assist in ensuring a healthier Canadian population.鈥

Ammi will evaluate the impact of changes in public health spending and structures on factors that determine good health, select mortality rates associated with public health interventions, potential years of life lost, and spillover on other publicly-funded health services.

鈥淭he transformation of the public health system in Canada accelerated in the late 2000s and 2010s,鈥 said Ammi. 鈥淗owever, there is little evidence of the impact of these transformations on public health outcomes, a necessary endeavor as the COVID-19 epidemic has put forward the crucial role of the public health systems.鈥

Further, Ammi wants to better understand the preferences of public health decision makers regarding future changes to the public health systems at the provincial, territorial and local levels across the country.
