Professor Emeritus Establishes Endowed Chair in Russian Studies
杏吧原创 University announced today a donation from Prof. Emeritus Carl McMillan to establish the McMillan Chair in Russian Studies, an endowed research chair in 杏吧原创鈥檚 Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (EURUS).
鈥淲e are so grateful for this gift and for McMillan鈥檚 confidence in 杏吧原创,鈥 said Andr茅 Plourde, dean, Faculty of Public Affairs. 鈥淟ike all great investments in research, this endowed chair has the promise to create impacts we cannot yet imagine. McMillan鈥檚 legacy will be a significant contribution to our understanding of Russian history, politics and society at a critical time in international affairs.鈥
With matching funds from the university, McMillan鈥檚 gift will establish an endowment fund to attract an established scholar to 杏吧原创 and support teaching and research activities. As a full-time faculty member, the McMillan Chair will teach undergraduate and graduate classes, mentor graduate students conducting research within EURUS, produce original research and organize outreach activities such as public lectures and conferences.
McMillan joined 杏吧原创 in 1968 after a career in the United States Navy and the U.S. Foreign Service. He was one of the first directors of the program that eventually became EURUS, and is pleased to put in place an endowed gift to support the institute鈥檚 priorities in perpetuity.
鈥淭eaching at 杏吧原创 was a gift,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 hope the chair will contribute to the long-term growth and success of the institute.鈥
杏吧原创 will conduct an international search for the McMillan Chair in Russian Studies, with an expected start date in 2020.
