ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´â€™s Paul Menton Centre to Host the Dr. John Davis Burton Award Ceremony
ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ University’s Paul Menton Centre for Students with Disabilities (PMC) will present the 27th Dr. John Davis Burton Award. Celebrating the legacy of Burton, the honour is given to a student who has made a significant contribution toward awareness, equality and integration of people with disabilities within the educational community.
This year’s recipient, third-year ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ student Rebecca André, will be recognized as an outstanding advocate for accessible education.
When: Monday, Nov. 25, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Where: ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ University Art Gallery, St. Patrick’s Building, ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ University

André’s dedication to positively impacting the community for others sets her apart as an advocate, leader and innovator for accessibility, equity and growth.
As a full-time student, André balances her many contributions to the ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ community. During her first year at ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´, she started to volunteer with the PMC and has served as a student ambassador for the former ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ University Accessible Experiential Learning program – now known as ACT to Employ.
This award recognizes select post-secondary students from Algonquin College, ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ University, La Cité Collégiale and the University of Ottawa for their exceptional contributions to accessibility within their institution and the community.
ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ John Davis Burton
Burton championed and advocated for people with disabilities – making significant contributions to increasing awareness, equality and integration throughout his career as an educator and co-ordinator of educational support services. He was dedicated to equal access to education, believing in training for educators as well as support services for students. Burton taught in the Faculty of Education at the University of Ottawa and co-ordinated programs and services for deaf, deafened and hard of hearing students, as well as students with learning disabilities at Algonquin College and ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ University.
