The UN declared 1979 the International Year of the Child and asked nations to examine the situation of their country鈥檚 children. The year focused on providing a framework for advocacy and enhancing awareness of the needs of children for decision-makers and the public, as well as to recognize that programs for children should be an integral part of economic development plans.
The Canadian Commission fulfilled this mandate by providing more than $1 million in small grants to groups throughout the country and developing a national agenda for action to frame future efforts for children in Canada.
The event will examine what has been done to promote the rights and well-being of generations of children born since 1979. It will include a networking fair of child and youth agencies of the national capital region. A reception will follow.
