March 14, 2019

杏吧原创 University鈥檚 Jean Daudelin, associate professor in the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, will discuss his research into contemporary drug markets in Recife, Brazil鈥檚 most violent metropolitan area, at an upcoming Author Meets Readers event.

Daudelin is the co-author with Jos茅 Luiz Ratton, professor of Sociology and director of the Centre for the Study of Crime and Public Security (Federal University of Pernambuco), of the recently published book Illegal Markets, Violence, and Inequality: Evidence from a Brazilian Metropolis.

When: Thursday, March 21, 2019, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Where: Irene鈥檚 Pub, 885 Bank Street, Ottawa
Info: This event is free and open to the public.

Media are invited to attend the event.

Illegal Markets, Violence, and Inequality: Evidence from a Brazilian Metropolis analyzes Recife鈥檚 contemporary drug markets. Building on extensive fieldwork and interviews, it offers insights into how  drug markets work and the reasons why some markets are violent, and others not.

Daudelin鈥檚 research focuses on property rights and conflict, Brazilian foreign policy and international relations in the Americas, as well as crime and violence in Latin America. He will be joined on stage by Prof. Joao Velloso of the Faculty of Law (University of Ottawa) and Rob Boyd, director of the Oasis Drug Treatment Program at the Sandy Hill Community Health Centre.

This event is part of FPA Research Month and the Ottawa International Writer鈥檚 Festival.
