ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ to Host Student Challenge on Supporting Companion Pet Care in Ottawa’s Inner City

November 18, 2019

ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ University will host the 2019 One HEALtH (Human Environment Animal Links to Health) student challenge, where teams will present their plans to create conditions in the Ottawa inner city area to allow anyone – including marginalized and vulnerable populations – to care for a companion pet. By caring for a pet, people may be able to derive psychological, social, emotional and physical benefits.

Media are invited to the competition’s final exhibit and judging session.

When: Friday, Nov. 22, 2019, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Where:
Room 482 Discovery Centre, Fourth Floor, MacOdrum Library, ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´
Info: A campus map is available online.

The students’ plans will consider the scientific evidence, social and environmental context, communications, policies, programs and infrastructure needed to promote healthy human-pet interactions in a dense urban area. Working in multi-disciplinary teams, the students will develop community-engaged solutions to empower pet care for all of Ottawa’s inner city citizens.

Judges from ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´, Ottawa Public Health, the Humane Society and Ottawa Inner City Health Program will evaluate these plans.

The winning teams will be rewarded with a one-term research internship.

This third annual challenge is organized by the Canadian Health Adaptations, Innovations, & Mobilization (CHAIM) Centre and the Discovery Centre.
