At this CU in the City talk, Ridgley will discuss renewed interest in sanctuary cities as a strategy to support refugees and migrants during the current period of intensifying anti-immigrant politics.
In response to the restrictive immigration agenda of U.S. President Donald Trump, local and state governments in the United States have been reviving policies that were originally passed in the 1980s to support Central American refugees.
Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver, among other Canadian municipalities, have declared themselves sanctuary cities. Across the country, there are active sanctuary campaigns aimed at increasing access to services and limiting local involvement in immigration policing.
What exactly is a sanctuary city? What potential do these cities have for migrant justice movements?
In this presentation, Ridgley will explore the history, purpose and challenges of sanctuary cities – with a specific focus on their relevance to efforts to make Ottawa a more healthy, just and inclusive city for all residents.
