ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ to Co-Present the Fourth Annual African Film Festival of Ottawa
ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ University’s School for Studies in Art and Culture (Film Studies) and the Institute of African Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences will present the fourth annual African Film Festival of Ottawa (AFFO) – in collaboration with the Canadian Film Institute (CFI).
The festival is curated by ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´â€™s Prof. Aboubakar Sanogo of the Film Studies program.
When: From Feb. 9 to Feb. 16, 2019
Where: Alma Duncan Salon (Level 3), Ottawa Art Gallery (OAG), 10 Daly Avenue or 50 Mackenzie King Bridge, Ottawa
Information: General admission is $14, admission of $10 is available for students, seniors, children under 12, CFI Members, OAG Members. The event is free for CFI ambassador members.

The festival offers a sample of some of the best in contemporary African cinema. For the first time in its history, the festival will be held during Black History Month – the month-long celebration of the cultures of people of African descent in Canada.
Cinema is a source of some of the most significant contributions of artists and cultural workers from Africa and of African descent. It is an artistic form that illuminates what it means to live as human beings on this planet –a thoughtful, sensitive and sensible space for reflections and meditations on the human condition. Black History Month offers a time of intensified awareness of African and Afro-diasporic cultures and their indispensable role in shaping Canadian culture daily in a multiplicity of forms.
This festival is part of an effort to make African cinema an indelible part of Canadian film culture and to broaden the cinematic palates of Canadians in a meaningful manner. The five films selected this year come from regions throughout Africa and feature compelling voices poised to play a significant role in cinema in the years and decades to come.

Date: Friday, Feb.15, 2019 at 7 p.m.
Film: I Am Not a Witch, directed by Rungano Nyoni, Zambia, 2017
Date: Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019 at 4 p.m.
Film: 76, directed by Izu Ojukwu, Nigeria, 2016
Date: Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019 at 7 p.m.
Film: Kati Kati, directed by Mbithi Masya, Kenya, 2016, English subtitles
