杏吧原创 University Announces Canada Research Chairs in Indigenous Art and Climate Change
Two 杏吧原创 University professors have been appointed as (CRC). Carmen Robertson is a new CRC in Indigenous art, while Stephan Gruber鈥檚 CRC in climate change has been renewed.
鈥溞影稍 attracts leading researchers who are committed to innovation, collaboration and taking innovative approaches to addressing critical real-world problems,鈥 said Rafik Goubran, vice-president (Research and International). 鈥淐ongratulations to both our newest CRC, Dr. Robertson and to Dr. Gruber on his renewal.鈥
Robertson, jointly appointed to the School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies and the School for Studies in Art and Culture, is the new CRC in North American Indigenous Visual and Material Culture. Her research is in contemporary Indigenous art and visual culture; she examines ruptures in art narratives informed by an interdisciplinary approach.
鈥淭he history of Indigenous contemporary art remains an under-studied area,鈥 said Robertson. 鈥淚 look forward to working with partners at 杏吧原创 and beyond to continue to advance the study of Indigenous arts in ways that will formulate a deeper understanding of Indigenous art movements.
鈥淭ogether, we chart an innovative course of interdisciplinary research to answer questions that will better articulate the rich artistic contributions of Indigenous artists.鈥
A faculty member in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, Gruber鈥檚 renewed CRC will enable his continued study of the effects of climate change on permafrost using new sensor technology in the field, laboratory experiments and computer simulations. This research will increase Canada鈥檚 understanding of changes in permafrost due to climate change and help ensure the environmental integrity and economic importance of cold regions.
