杏吧原创 PhD Students to Hold Ottawa Barbershop Talk Series on Black Masculinity and Misconceptions

杏吧原创 PhD Sociology students Warren Clarke and Nadine Powell have organized the upcoming Ottawa event , a discussion of how black Canadian masculinities are nurtured by women. This event seeks to understand the experiences of women who are raising black young men in contemporary Canadian societies.

The Ottawa discussion will take place simultaneously with talks in Montreal and Toronto. This format will assist in understanding the development of black masculinity from anglophone and francophone perspectives.

When: Wednesday, July 11, 2018 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Where: Cultural Arts Studio, 40 Colonnade Road, Ottawa

This series explores how young black men socially construct their masculinities in a Canadian context. The event seeks to disrupt social norms, anti-black racism and negative stereotypes in Canada which impede the upward mobility of black men. Building on a previous dialogue about black Canadian masculinities, the series encourages positive social outcomes for black men and boys, and their community members.

Interested members of the public are invited to complete in advance of the discussion.

Barbershop Talk Series is a social event that uses the “Barbershop” as a place to meet and collaborate about issues that concern the community, particularly black men and boys. The initiative is geared toward creating a safe space for community members to discuss relevant and critical issues and brainstorm about solutions that will help young black men in their social development.
