Sharilyn Hale, Member of the Advisory Council

Dr. Sharilyn Hale helps those who give, give well, and supports social purpose organizations to deepen their performance. With a leadership career spanning more than 20 years in the social profit sector, she draws on expertise in philanthropic strategy, family systems, organizational development, governance and research.

Serving clients across Canada and the Caribbean, Sharilyn is an advisor with NYC-based to support multi-generational family philanthropy, a governance advisor and trainer with , a , and member of the . Sharilyn serves on the Board of the is a leadership volunteer for the accreditation program for charities in Canada, and was a Provincial Appointee to the , which is Canada鈥檚 largest grant-making foundation. Having begun her career as a professional fundraiser, Sharilyn is Past Chair of , the global credential ensuring effective and accountable fundraising. She’s an invited speaker and educator to professional communities around the world, and has written or co-authored numerous publications including (3rd ed. 2011, Wiley), (2011, Civil Sector Press), as well as 鈥淕iving in the Caribbean鈥 for the (2015).

Recently, Sharilyn successfully defended her doctoral dissertation on governance in multi-generational family philanthropy in Canada. She’s a Research Associate with the Centre for Global Generosity, exploring high-net-worth philanthropy in the Caribbean. She also serves as a member of the Advisory Council for Canada鈥檚 first graduate degree program in Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership at 杏吧原创 University; a program initiated by a group of sector leaders, including Sharilyn, who saw a need to build Canada鈥檚 philanthropic capacity.

In 2024, she spoke to PANL Perspectives about “Governance Excellence and the Board-CEO Relationship.”
