Measuring well-governed migration: The 2016 Migration Governance Index https://publications.iom.int/books/measuring-well-governed-migration-2016-migration-governance-index#new_tab?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=measuring-well-governed-migration-2016-migration-governance-index Wed, 18 May 2016 00:00:27 +0000 /metropolis/?p=1646 Jointly implemented with the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the project involves the development of a policy-benchmarking framework to assess the extent to which national migration policies facilitate orderly, safe and well managed migration, as laid out in SDG Target 10.7.

The framework is composed of over 70 indicators grouped under 5 different dimensions of migration governance, and draws upon the MiGOF categories. Research was conducted in 15 pilot countries, the results of which were released on 2 May, 2016 at IOM HQ in Geneva and 3 May, 2016 at GMDAC in Berlin.

The aim is to replicate this initial exercise in a larger number of countries during a second phase of the project.

Immediate Release: Metropolis launches Professional Development programme /metropolis/2014/announcement-metropolis-launches-elite-professional-development-programme/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=announcement-metropolis-launches-elite-professional-development-programme Thu, 10 Apr 2014 13:46:24 +0000 http://www.carleton.ca/metropolis/?p=798 The Metropolis Project has mobilized top Canadian and international expertise on migration and integration to offer a one of a kind training programme for Canadian and international senior policy makers, practitioners and the business sector.

The programme has been developed in close collaboration with an international Experts Advisory Committee, including Graeme Hugo (University of Adelaide), Jan Niessen (Migration Policy Group), Imelda Nicolas (Commission on Filipinos Overseas) and Peter Schatzer (IOM) among many others.

The initial pilot training, including tuition, is funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada and will run from June 23-29, 2014 in Ottawa.

ā€œWith global demographics unequivocally pointing towards a future where we have more, not less, international migration, the need for experience and expertise on migration and integration will only grow. Global demographic and economic trends will have inexorable effects on international migration with shifts in countries of origin and destination and with a growing international competition for skilled immigrants.ā€ States Howard Duncan, Executive Head of the Metropolis Project.Ā  He adds: ā€œThe Metropolis Project has been approached on numerous occasions by governments and sector professionals seeking advice on how to improve policies and programs to better manage migration and integration. Metropolis Professional Development will fill that gap.ā€

Book Release: Afghanistan – 2014 and beyond /metropolis/2014/afghanistan-2014-beyond/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=afghanistan-2014-beyond Wed, 26 Mar 2014 15:33:09 +0000 http://carleton.ca/metropolis/?p=733 The Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior has released a timely publication on the future of Afghanistan, a nation that has been gripped by war and a continual flow of refugees seeking asylum all over the globe.

Metropolis is pleased to note that editors of this volume include Peter Webinger, one of Metropolis’ Expert Advisors supporting the Metropolis Professional Development programme.

Four substantive sections of the book examine the outlook on security and recent political developments; economic outlooks and possible international implications moving forward; the challenges and opportunities that women will continue to face while seeking basic human rights and gender equity;Ā  and of particular interest is the chapter on migration by Martin Hofman & David Reichel. Hofman and Reichel provide a comprehensive statistical analysis of migration flows from Afghanistan to Europe from 2002 to 2012. The available data is drawn on to describe patterns of Afghan migration to the EU, characterized as ‘flight migration’, and concludes that European countries should be prepared for this pattern to continue, including a prediction for flows of migration to include more unaccompanied minors and family reunification.
