Riding on the bus, working out at the gym, waiting for your friend who is ALWAYS late鈥his is the perfect time to work on your Spanish using one of the many free podcasts you can subscribe to on your phone.

Now I鈥檓 not talking about one of those 鈥淟earn Spanish with Us鈥 kinds of podcasts鈥ou know, the ones where they teach specific topics or functions.  No, what I鈥檓 talking about listening to authentic audio made specifically for Spanish-speakers.  News broadcasts, for example, or travel stories, or entertainment/sports.

I know I know.  You鈥檙e thinking: 鈥淪eriously鈥 just started studying Spanish like 5 minutes ago.  I can鈥檛 understand any of that.鈥  And sure, you鈥檙e probably right.  Maybe you鈥檒l only get 10-20% when you first start out:  鈥渂lah blah blah Justin Bieber鈥lah blah blah los clippers de Los Angeles鈥︹.  But the more you listen, the better you鈥檒l become.  And if you choose something like the news, then you鈥檒l start to hear the same things repeated over and over again.  鈥渂lah blah blah las noticias de la casa blanca鈥lah blah blah.鈥  And because the topics they discuss are things you鈥檙e probably already familiar with from the news in English, you鈥檒l have a better chance of knowing what鈥檚 going on.

Also great about newscasts, is that you鈥檒l hear people from many different Hispanic regions speaking either as announcers or interviewees: Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico鈥ven Spain.  And these different speakers will give you a broad selection of accents to listen to鈥ith different pacing鈥nd different genders.

Anyway, there are many podcasts out there.  My suggestion would be to find a topic you鈥檙e interested in and subscribe to that.  Here are a few titles to get you started:
