Marie-Louise Riel: Oral Traditions and the Resilience of Métis Culture in Québec

In this lecture, Professor Sébastien Malette (ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ University) will unpack the rhetoric which denies the existence of the historical Métis of Québec. Responding to scholarly accusations that Eastern Métis are “zombiesâ€ with no “livingâ€ traditions, Professor Malette will present the oral tradition of Marie-Louise Riel, reported as protecting Louis Riel in the Outaouais region during his political exile after the first resistance of 1869-1870. Examples of East-West Métis kinship and solidarity, historical and of recent vintage, that defy the territorial reification of Métis culture as being solely a western phenomenon will also be discussed.
