These emails often encourage the recipient to click on a link and provide sensitive information, like their username and password.

To better protect 杏吧原创 staff, faculty, and students against these threats, ITS will be implementing external email tagging.聽 Starting on May 6, all emails received from senders outside the CUNET network will be marked with [External Email].

After May 6, if you receive an email that appears to be from an @carleton.ca email address, but has been marked [External Email], it鈥檚 a warning that the email may not be legitimate.

In addition, email that have links in them will also include the following 鈥榯ag鈥 or warning, at the bottom of messages.

Text in warning message reads: Caution: This email contains links to content or websites. Always be cautious when clicking on external links or attachments. If in doubt, please forward suspicious emails to聽phishing@carleton.ca.

It鈥檚 important to note that an email message with this warning does not necessarily mean the email is malicious 鈥 only that the recipient should take caution before clicking any links or attachments included within the email.

For questions or additional information, please email the ITS Service Desk at its.service.desk@carleton.ca or call 520-3700.

Shopping Online This Holiday Season? Be Careful of These Three Things /its/2018/shopping-online-this-holiday-season-be-careful-of-these-three-things/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=shopping-online-this-holiday-season-be-careful-of-these-three-things Mon, 03 Dec 2018 17:23:28 +0000 /its/?p=25476 How is it December already?! Chances are you have some holiday shopping to do (or start), and if you鈥檙e like me you鈥檒l turn to online shops.聽 It’s fast, easy, convenient, and, in some cases, I can have my purchases wrapped and shipped directly to my loved ones.

But before you open that browser, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Thing #1: Criminals are trying to steal our information: protect your credit card

  • Use a credit card rather than your debit card, if possible. You may even want to consider using a separate 鈥榦nline shopping鈥 credit card with a lower limit.
  • Avoid saving your credit card number on websites.
  • When making purchases online, check that there is a green bar in the URL along with a certificate that verifies that they are a trusted site. look for the https, not http.

Thing #2: Public networks are not safe: connect with caution

  • Avoid shopping on public wifi or sharing any person information. Anyone can gain access to a public network and monitor your activity or steal your personal information.
  • If public wifi must be used to conduct transactions, use a VPN service to help ensure a secure connection.

Thing #3: Phoney聽sites are out there: think before you click聽

  • Be wary of phoney shipping status emails. You are likely expecting more package deliveries this time of year and cybercriminals seek to exploit this by sending fake shipment and delivery notification emails and text messages. If you鈥檙e not sure if an email is legit, go directly to the tracking website. Don鈥檛 click on the links in the email.
  • Know how to spot a fake pop-up ad. If an ad for an amazing deal pops up while you鈥檙e browsing, go with your gut. If it seems too good to be true it probably is. Don鈥檛 click on it. Just hit the 鈥渪鈥 and continue to sites you know are legitimate.
  • Beware of texts that promise big discounts on high-quality brands, often written in urgent language, poor grammar, and with an abundance of emojis and punctuation.
