M23’s capture of Goma is the latest chapter in eastern Congo’s long-running war

At a recent summit in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, leaders of eight African states released a statement calling for an in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The statement comes after a flareup in fighting in eastern DRC that has killed hundred and wounded thousands.

On Jan. 31, 2025 the rebel group known as the captured the city of Goma in the eastern DRC. At a news conference, Corneille Nangaa, leader of the Congo River Alliance that includes M23, declared that they were and would march to the DRC’s capital of Kinshasa.
