A Brief Overview

The聽flight聽of refugees from Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos聽to other countries around the South China Sea, either by boats to harbours in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, the Philippines and Singapore, or overland to Thailand and China, started in April-May 1975 and continued, intermittently, until the early 1990s.聽聽Its initial causes were the victories of聽national communist聽armed forces against聽the聽governments聽in all three countries.聽聽As the defender of purportedly 鈥渓iberal鈥 but, in fact often corrupt local governments, the United States聽had聽waged聽unwinnable struggles after the defeat and withdrawal of聽France, the former colonial power.聽Once the communist nationalists聽won the聽vicious, terribly destructive聽Indochinese聽wars, they were ready to punish their enemies, meaning any supporters, officials or soldiers of the former governments.
