Cover and Back drawing by: Aya Usama

Held on May 3rd at the in the MacOdrum Library at Ӱԭ University, the Atlas in a Day workshop offered participants the opportunity to explore the theme of “Fragility” through the art of mapmaking. The workshop was guided by Laurence Simard-Gagnon, a professor in the department of psychosociology and social work at Université du Québec à Rimouski (UQAR), Lévis campus.

Over the full-day workshop, participants had the chance to dive into creative storytelling through the mapping process. At the end of the workshop, the maps produced by the participants were compiled to create a curated atlas centered around the theme of fragility. Aya Usama, an MA in Anthropology student, added a unique touch with a beautiful live cover drawing for the curated atlas. A big thank you to everyone who joined and contributed to this event’s success. We’re excited about future opportunities to continue to explore ways of storytelling through mapping.

Marie-Eve Carrier-Moisan is the new incumbent of the Joint Chair in Women’s Studies at the University of Ottawa and Ӱԭ University.

Dr. Carrier-Moisan began her 2-year mandate on July 1, 2023.

During her mandate as Joint Chair in Women’s Studies, Dr. Carrier-Moisan will propose various events on the theme of “Multimodal Scholarships and Feminist, Public Knowledges”. These events will be opportunities to learn and reflect together on creative and multimodal approaches to feminist research and ways of doing and telling research otherwise, drawing inspiration from emerging practices that tend to decenter dominant modes of scientific knowledges and to expand the possibilities of accessible, feminist, anti-racist, decolonial knowledges. She invites members of the student and faculty community, as well as feminist activists, artists, and scholars to join her in the various events and activities she will be organizing at the University of Ottawa and Ӱԭ University.

Dr. Carrier-Moisan will also be teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses, (including in English) at Ӱԭ University, “Storying otherwise: feminist scholarships through (ethno)graphic narratives” and in French, at the University of Ottawa, “Raconter la recherche autrement: approches créatives et multimodales des savoirs féministes.

Joint Chair in Women’s Studies (JCWS) at the University of Ottawa and Ӱԭ University

In 1985, the Office of the Secretary of State created a Joint Chair in Women’s Studies (JCWS) at the University of Ottawa and Ӱԭ University. Four other chairs of women’s studies, in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Quebec City and Halifax, were also established under the same program. Working in both French and English, the incumbent of the Joint Chair in Women’s Studies at the University of Ottawa and Ӱԭ University teaches, engages in research and participates in appropriate committees and events on both campuses, acts as a resource person on women’s issues and feminist research at both universities, and establishes and maintains contact with local, regional, national and international feminist educational and community-based organizations.

National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

October 8, 2024

Dec 6, 2021

Dear friends of the Pauline Jewett Institute of Women’s and Gender Studies:

On this National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, we continue to to remember and to mourn the women whose lives were cut short at École Polytechnique in Montreal on December 6, 1989.  Although we cannot restore this terrible loss, we continue to honour and recognize it through the work that we do at the Institute to address gender-based violence, which continues in a multitude of forms.  As our poster suggests, there are intersectional connections to be made to specific forms of violence and misogyny against racialized and Indigenous women, transgender women, and femmes, LGBTQ2SIA+, and gender non-binary people.  We dedicate ourselves to creating spaces that are safe for open discussion and study for all, and where grief can be expressed, so that we can transform the worlds we live in to eradicate violence.

Message to Undergraduate Students in WGST 1808

Dear 1808:

Today, December 6, is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, which is recognized across Turtle Island. This is a very important day that I would like to comment on. Please note, that there are references to violence below, especially gender-based, misogynistic violence. Please do not hesitate to contact anyone on the teaching team should you be looking for resources to discuss this violence.

I would like to add that it is up to everyone in our community, regardless of gender, or ability, or race, or sexuality, or class, to call attention to not only the darkness of the misogynistic and gender-based violence that continues today, but also to the many victories for those who have fought for change.

However, as feminist thinkers in our learning community of WGST 1808, we are also keenly aware that when we talk about and take action on misogynistic and gender-based violence, we will consider gender, ability, race, sexuality, class, among other things. We will especially remember and consider that the very supports our communities can offer have workers who are the very perpetrators of the violence, such as in the legal system.

We are going to continue to talk about all of this in WGST 1808 and I am happy to talk about it with anyone via Zoom or in-person at Ӱԭ. – Katherine Bausch
